Help - Phone Connects to Internet but Can't Call - Amaysim

Hi all,

I gave my parents a Sim from the recent Amaysim deal. They have put it in an unlocked Telstra Buzz 4GX.

It connects to the internet always (phone shows a 4G connection), but more often than not they can't make or receive any calls, nor SMS. Even in a variety of locations.

Any ideas?

I suspect a network issue, but the Amaysim network map suggests full 3G and 4G support. I'm pretty sure the Buzz supports all Optus Bands as well?

FYI - They are using it in Alice Springs.

    • Call worked once while they were at the shops. Yep, data is all good. I think the phone doesn't support 900, only 2100. So calls will only work near a 2100 tower. Optus is data only on 4G, and the phone supports 700, so that makes sense I guess.

  • Sometimes this happens due to APN settings. One tip I read (which I can't find again) to reset the phone to the correct APN settings is:

    • Go to Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Settings
    • Deliberately choose a wrong carrier
    • Let the connection fail
    • Restart the phone
    • Go back to Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Settings
    • This time choose Amaysim
    • Cheers, but the data part works fine. I think it's a network support issue with the ZTE buzz 4Gx (no 900 support, only 2100 I think). Compounded with Optus switching off 2G last week or so.

    Sounds like it's a data only sim or as others have said it can only get 4G data…

    Maybe buy them a new phone

  • Yes; sounds like a band support issue with the ZTE.

    Why don't you test the SIM with another phone and see if that is the case?
