Kogan Agora TVs Are Much Cheaper than Competitors

They're so much cheaper than other 4K TVs, what's the main reason for this? Cheaper, older generation panels? Less features?

Why would I spend 4x the price for a Samsung or Sony TV?

  • There is more to a TV than just the panel, it's also the back-end processing that can make or break a TV. You will also notice a considerable difference in the TV OS and sound quality.

  • Up-scaling definitely isn't something that makes 1080p look like actual native 4K, but 1080p video does look better on a Samsung or Sony than on a Kogan. Which is kind of important if you're going to be buying a 4K TV when most content still isn't 4K.

  • Like Ryanek says, back-end matters. It might be able to produce a still image at the same capacity as a more expensive tv but when action or panning shots are introduced you can get artifacting stutters and other poor quality cues.

Its also why when you go into a tv showroom TV's are all running video with a stationary camera position looking at vivid colors, streams landscapes ect. If you want to test a TV your buying take in a video that shows a lot of panning across scenes or with confetti raining down etc.

There's also marketing and distribution costs involved. Kogan Agora TVs are only sold from Kogan/DSE as far as I'm aware. They don't really advertise apart from their own website as much as Samsung or LG. Also Kogan operates from web front, no shop front like other major 'bricks and mortar' retailers, which ultimately can drive down costs as well vs displaying TVs in retailers.

I got the kogan 55" 4K on an ebay special. Terrible light bleeding from the lower left side.

    • But for the price - couldn't have been much - doable?
