Their ramen is delicious! Expect very long lines though :(

Used to like their Ramen, but find that they use way too much MSG nowadays. Get tingly fingers afterwards.
I have found another place around the corner from there which is a lot better and MSG free called Mr Ramen San in MidCity Center few doors down from Shandong Mama.

Slightly better prices and free extra ramen. Their ramen is also handmade on premise. Also owned and cooked by authentic Japanese people.

You sure they don't use msg?
Unconfirmed but I'm pretty sure most use msg.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted, maybe people love MSG?

        • +4

They advertise no MSG on their menu + in posters in store. They do offer a MSG in a shaker bottle if you like MSG and want to add some. But i find their soups tasty enough to not require MSG.

They do get lines though but not as much as Hakata Gensuke.

Alot of places use MSG because it allows them to skimp on the pork bones.

If people are in Sydney, definitely go try out Gumshara in Haymarket. That place is also MSG free and the taste is around 85% the same as getting it in Japan.

I've been to Japan heaps of times now, and tried plenty of Ramen so I know what is authentic and what is "trick westerners". Tried pretty much all ramen places in Melbourne already. IMO even Mr Ramen San doesn't compare to Gumshara in Sydney, but it is as close as we can get in Melbourne.

@caprimulgus: Not saying MSG is bad, its more a quantity which makes it bad. Its like having too much of anything is bad for you.

Also I know of people who actually have allergies to MSG, which those articles pretty much say there is no such thing and its a placebo. It doesn't explain why some chinese restaurants have the effect and some don't. And its consistently also. E.g. Restaurant A always gives that but Restaurant B never gives it.

Lol reading those articles sounded like a dodgy chinese restaurant owner wrote it who also believes there is nothing wrong with Gluten… you just don't have enough gluten so you get allergies to it!

BTW i am chinese… so I have eaten at plenty of chinese restaurants in Melb and also know which ones are "trick ghost men" and which ones are the legit deal.

          Placebo/Nocebo effect.

          Placebo/Nocebo/Confirmation bias

          Confirmation bias/denial.

That's great. Unfortunately, being Chinese doesn't make you invulnerable to cognitive bias and believing incorrect things. (Anyone for some medicinal tiger penis?)

@caprimulgus: Basically you are bias though towards MSG being good for you, which is why you refute my opinions.
If you were as neutral as you pretend to be, you'd start posting the other side of the argument. Which there is plenty on the internet. This is why there is no absolute truth to the issue or else there would be no arguments.

Ironic though, that every few years something comes up saying that "we previously said its healthy now its unhealthy"…. then a few years later another study will say "we previously said its unhealthy it is now healthy" LOL!

I'm not saying MSG is bad for you at all, just giving an alternative to the above Ramen place for other Ramen connoisseurs to try.

          @lplau:

LOL. Paleo Pete, is that you…?

      • Any prove hakata use artificial MSG? Did you ask ?

And FYI, most Japanese soup stock do have natural occurring MSG from kasuobushi and kombu etc…which contributes to the umami flavour , so if you allergic to MSG then should avoid Japanese food with strong umami

        • Just saying from experience. I can handle MSG but when shops use excessive MSG it gives me tingles on my finger tips.
I know that quite a few ingredients has natural MSG, such as seaweed.

Quite a few Ramen places uses artificial MSG, lol. Even in Japan quite a few of them use it.
In fact i believe the Japanese invented MSG.

        • @lplau: Japanese isolated MSG from seaweed. MSG is perfectly fine, everything in moderation.

Are you sure it's authentic Japanese people? Shandong Mama sounds like Chinese :)

        • I said a few doors down from Shandong Mama. lol. Not in the same place. haha.
If you are a melbournite you'd know where Shandong Mama is so thought it would be easiest to point out the approximate location of Mr Ramen San.

        • @lplau: lol my bad. That's what happened when peeking ozbargain at work :)

      • Tingly fingers from food?

  • Wish they'd jack up their prices a little actually, the lines go halfway around the block (before discount)

  • Would this also be available at the Hawthorn store ?

  • Best ramen in Australia for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!
I waited 40 minutes the other day for the black garlic ramen.. mmm definitely worth it after standing out in the cold!
They have a Chicken ramen shop around the corner too which is pretty good and shorter/no lines…
I always have to get a bowl of it whenever I go to Melbourne… I just recently filled my card so I get free ramen, toppings and a side!

  • Still the best ramen in Melbourne. The constant lines at the Russell St and QV (Chicken Ramen) store attest to that.

  • i have eat ramen here. it is good long long line though. best in melbourne easily i thinking

  • I think I need to move to Melbourne, for those weekly freebies.

    How much is shipping?

  • +1

Great now the lines will triple

    • On top of the regular hour wait.

  • After eating and take away for the whole village. Scores!

  • Can't wait for the branch in Perth to open..

    • Me too, cant wait to try. I am yet to find a really good Tonkotsu ramen in Perth. I had only realized how delicious a Tonkotsu ramen is after I visited Japan last year

      • +1

Yeah, some of the ramen we had in Japan is just incredible..nothing better than a damn good Tonkotsu ramen in the middle of a Japanese winter…

Between Hakata and Ippudo opening up in Perth, the other ramen joints in Perth better lift their game..

        • Wait, what.. Ippudo is coming?! Oh man that's really gonna change the game big time..

        • @John:
          Yup, sure is..

Personally, I prefer Hakata over Ippudo, especially their black garlic monster, but each to their own..:)

  • I'm not in Melbourne then can you please change the date OP?

  • Is this yet another Chinese knock off? Or are they legitimately / genuinely Japanese?

    • i think legitamately but not genuinely

    • Legit Japanese. You can tell when you walk through the door. One of the best ramen's in Melbourne.

      • Awesome, thanks for that, might have to check it out then :)
