I bought ticket for MEL - HKG leaving 02/11 and arriving back on 08/11. The timing of VA89 was perfect as it leaves Melbourne on 1:35 AM and arrives Hong Kong on 8:15 AM leaving the whole day to explore. Now I got change in schedule email and the new flight is VA87 leaving Mel on 10:55 AM and arriving hong Kong on 17:35 PM wadsting the whole day. I am pissed.
But checking on Virgin website there is no Mel to Hkg flight from 8/11 and no return flight from 10/11. So it looks like this route is being cancelled. I am worried, should I accept the changes or cancel the trip. I have yet to do hotel booking and they have cancellation charges.

Yes I have choice of refund. But I really want to go, first time to Hong Kong. I will give them a call tomorrow. Scared if they cancel the flight altogether later. Seems this route is being cancelled as you can't buy tickets starting from 8/11.
Looks like it.
If you are thinking about a refund/rebook on the MEL-HKG leg, you can look at Cathay Pacific 178 ex MEL Depart 12:50am, Arrive 07.00am.
Probably cost more though…
They will have sales. And given its a November flight, I would wait for one. Will be anywhere from $600-850 return on sale. I booked my return to HKG with cathay in April for June, so only two months before. Definitely cancel VA and wait for a cathay sale.
I don't think the route's being cancelled - see this article on VA changing all Hong Kong flights to 10:55am for a consistent schedule..
The article says the time changes are planned up to March 2018, and they will review the changes after March.
Also I can book fares well into 2018 - not sure why you're not seeing the flight after November.
If the one additional day means that much, see if you can book for the day before?
And don't forget some comprehensive travel insurance!
agreed, and get the insurance now not just before the flight leaves
Can anyone recommend travel insurance that covers change of flight times? I didn't think any of them did? Or are we talking cancellation? Also, if they have changed flight times on your booking, but not notified you yet by email, would you still be covered by insurance that you take out now? I'm thinking no.
I am not talking about taking out travel insurance for this instance, however if they change the flight on you and you had non refundable hotel bookings, those would be covered.
Its always an issue that many forget, they decide to leave travel insurance until just before they leave, and it costs the same. Issues can come up like here well before you leave.
I also booked (flybuys) MEL>HKG return depart 11/11 return 16/11 and yes my outbound flight was changed from overnight to daytime and I'm not very happy either… yet to receive advice on the changed flight. I certainly hope they are not cancelling!
Flights over this period showing for me… they have just cancelled VA89 and replaced with VA87.
Don't they give you the choice of refund if the rescheduled flight doesn't suit you? You should be talking to VA first, not us.
