Anyone know if these can be used as internal hard drives for like a laptop or something?
Yes and no
Yes, the drive inside normally has a sata connection which can be used in most desktops and laptops
No, the 3Tb and up drives are thicker than the standard 2.5" laptop drives and as such may not fit in your laptop. There are some exceptions. Currently the Toshiba canvio 2Tb model is the highest capacity standard size laptop hard drive they make.
Anyone know if this drive is reliable. Looking for something that I can keep plugged in and transfer 2 tbs of data from long term storage. Won't need to read write to it regularly.
I've used Toshiba in the past and it did last me 2 years of regular usage before it died on me. Also have tried WD and Seagate and from the 3 my WD has lasted the longest. In terms of value, this post beats the rest.
Might be a dumb question, but its something I always wondered… let's say if you have an external hard disk and it randomly dies on you, what happens to the information inside? Like if I intend to use it to store pictures and videos, but what happens if that hard disk dies on me.
Chances are slim you'll recover your data if the drive fails
Best solution is to backup your backups or use cloud storage
Still there. If you have the skills you can recover it by swapping boards over from an identical model.
..most people don't have the skills. Nothing to worry about unless your someone important
..most people aren't important.
@Mr Mrrtn: Chances are slim based on what? If you have the money, its very likely it can be retrieved.
@dfaktz: pretty much this.. if you have the money most things can be retrieved if it is mechanical.. if it is solid state.. might be tougher.
Ive never had any hard drive fail on me, yet people talk of it everywhere on forums. Can I just ask how you used this particular drive that failed on you?
Yes, good question! It actually unfortunately does happen quite often to people and I thought it use to happen to a minority of people only. Basically the drive won't boot up anymore when plugged it as basic as it sounds. I use all my hard drives as media storage for the family and have them plugged into the tv at all times (yes I know it's bad!). So far my WD one I have had since high school (roughly 8 years ago) is still going strong but boots up pretty slowly compared to my Toshiba one I purchased early 2013 which died mid way 2015. My seagate drives are a little different, they take a few tried before they boot up but I'm sure they still work (about 3 or so years). I have different brands of hard drives because I buy them when a cheap deal arises like this post :)
Wow….this is great price….eBay is $168 and even with 15% off (if there is one) would still not beat this.
Perfect timing. Was looking at buying a portable.
Bought 1TB for $88 a month ago, so this is one great deal!
Is this subject to GST?
Edit: How does warranty work in Australia?
By the time drive fail, you have Amazon here in Melb :)
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/south-east/amazon-confirm…Would like to know how warranty works too before purchasing…
One in the bag for me. Thanks nocure!
$108 for me
sold out just when I was changing shipping address to a pick up location… damn
It's usually me who misses out so I know the feeling, sorry bro.
Says it's in stock but when I add to cart it I get a message saying it's not available yet when going back to the site and refreshing it still says in stock :s
Out of stock….
Sold out :(
Got to add in cart then when paying it said its not available anymore! God dammit - this was so cheap!
Have had two Toshiba Canvio USB HDDs go bad on me in the past few years, bought from OfficeWorks. Both times I had to extract the files and folders off them using specialised software and then reformat them.
Need a internal 2.5' HDD for laptop. Would it work if I buy a portable one and take out the exclosure and just use the inside HDD?
Thanks nocure, I can always rely on you for a solid deal.
Cheers.
