21st Birthday Present under $500

Hi, my brother is turning 21 and I want to buy him something. He's into tech stuff and I don't mind looking at other options too. My budget is about $500AUD. FYI, he already has a smartwatch, GoPro and a good phone. I'm really confused, hope you guys can help me!

Cheers.

Edit: I don't want to give cash! Anything else would be appreciated.

Why not jist give him $500 so he can buy exactly what he wants? Instead of you making a rough guess.

    • +18

But when it comes his birthday his friend will give him cash so he can get just what he wants, and it would be the same amount as no one would want to be seen as a cheep skate or a big shot, so each just gives each other $500 cash every birthday until one of them dies leaving the other $500 richer.

      Sheldon is right.

      • +1

He could do a lot more with $1k than $500. I'd definitely go cash so long as he's reasonably sensible.

    • +2

Because it shows that you really don't know that person or what they want.

      • +2

        But he doesnt?

      • +2

He's asking on an internet forum…

  • +10

Could take a look at 3D Printers. Plenty available well under $500 (some ~$200 have been posted here, e.g. this or the newer version).

    • +5

      Heck now I want a 3D printer!

  • +10

    Drone

    • -1

DJI Mavic is more then 500

    • +1

No drone for less than $500 is worth the money IMHO. Cheapest drone worth the money is probably the $800+ Dji Spark. Plus most drones don't actually get used that much unless the person travels a lot or is really into video making.

21st shouldn't be a present that will be in the cupboard or broken within 12 months, it should be something memorable.

My advice would be something outside his comfort zone from red balloon/adrenaline etc. Think skydiving, rally driving, v8s etc. Something he'll remember for years.

    • +2

I know what you mean, we're taking him out for camping next weekend which should be memorable enough I think.

      • +8

Nah give him an experience, something he'd never buy himself. That's what siblings are for!

        • +1

Haha thanks for that. I'd consider that option too.

        • +1

          @namankumar1282:
Or something classy like a good real watch?
G-Shock to start off, or a mechanical Seiko, or a "cheap" Swiss ?

        • @Slippery Fish:

          Yep exactly!

    • How about an expensive wallet, something like a Louis Vuitton wallet?

      • +5

He'll be too scared to use it.

    • Absolutely. Make him earn that present and don't let him forget it!

  • +3

    $499 cash.

    • +11

For my friends 21st I made up a sack with a dollar sign (like in cartoons when a bank gets robbed) and filled it with dollar coins

      • and filled it with dollar coins

        How many?

        • +28

          50
He's not that good a friend

        • +1

          @outlander:

Shoulda filled it with 5c coins then.

        • +1

          @Scrooge McDuck:

Well I was actually going to fill it with chocolate coins, but that turned out to be too much for too little

Shoulda filled it with 5c coins then.

Nah man, gotta have that gold gleam!

        • I think this calls for Nurofen for headach… oh wait..

    • +1

Condoms ? Free from last OzBargain offer

  • +2

Get them a ps4 pro or a switch

    • +41

He said he was into tech, not a dirty casual

      • Let me guess "PC Master Race".

I'm building a new 3-4k computer, but I still love my switch. I don't get why communities for one company or pc gaming look down upon anyone who is interested in something else.

  • +8

A good set of bookshelf speakers from Audioengine, like the 5+

    • I was going to suggest this. Great for a 21st birthday present because they will last.

  • I'd prefer the money, but other than that probably would enjoy eating out, road tripping or travelling somewhere, or doing something unique.

  • -1

    $499.95 in cash

  • +3

If he's a PC gamer or into content creation, how about Ryzen 5 CPU + RAM + Mobo?

  • Yard glass, blow up sheep and hip flask.

  • Take him to the casino and put the whole amount on his favourite number on the roulette wheel. Small chance to win but it will be memerable forever ;)

    Concert tickets
    Preorder upcoming game
    New monitor / desk chair

    • +5

      His favourite number is 37.

  • +1

If you can up your budget a little, you can get him the DJI Spark. Any techy would love that!

    • Speaking as someone who owns one, it isn't worth it without the remote.

You can buy the P3P used for 700 though.

  • Take him on a trip to the Gold Coast or Melbourne or skiing for a weekend. You two will have a great birthday holiday.

    • 500$ on a weekend skiing? Not that memorable. $2000 yes, memorable.

  • +1

Wowee $500, what a great brother!

    • Yeah jesus I don't know anyone who has spend even half that on a sibling for 21st, he must be rolling in cash :)

      • Good investments or analyst job at Westpac.

Soon they ask about washing cars and when it would be ok to use Voss water to give to their pet as their normal drinking water.

  • Watch with some engraving on the back about being brothers

  • Matching tattoos?

  • +1

I agree definitely not cash! Too easy, not personal or memorable!
    Personalised number plates?

  • -4

Don't give him something he has to find room for in his house.

I am so (profanity) sick of getting presents which, in honesty go straight in the bin; because its too much effort even trying to sell them for a tiny amount of cash.

No "experiences" or "holidays" either. He may not share the same sense of adventure as you.

    Good gifts:

    • Cash

This was a shorter list than I expected.

    • +37

      I am so (profanity) sick of getting presents which, in honesty go straight in the bin;

Where is your bin and when is your birthday?

    • +1

Used to think like you. Next step in the process is admit that the constant back and forth of money transfer is a pointless exercise, actually a net loss because of the $5 spent on gift card each time, so you all agree not to play the charade anymore and just celebrate without a gift.

edit: Big partys are a little bit of an exception. I got enough money from my 21st to buy a first car

      • +1

I stopped buying stuff for myself, hoping that it would leave more choices for family to give me presents.
I still got Bunnings gift cards, which I used to buy stuff to make repairs around the house.
Ended up going shopping with my money after Christmas, to make myself a nice present. ( Far Cry Primal, last year )

    • +6

You're forgetting that the biggest part of gift-giving is the thought.

I don't care how cheap or how expensive a present is. It's how much thought has gone into it that matters to me.

      • -2

Though, if i have to walk to the trash to discard of it; It has cost me time that I could have otherwise spent doing something I want to do.

        • +6

doing something I want to do.

          Like being negative? 😤

      • Is that in absolute terms, or relative? because some of my relatives could think all week and still give a lousy gift
For my 21st my great aunt gave me a womans purse. A cheap one

        • +1

hahaha - I didn't mean the amount of thought that goes into thinking of the cheapest and most irrelevant present! lol.

  • +1

So, I was thinking of a drone but this is I think too early to invest in one because of the exponential growth we're seeing in the industry.

Console is useless as he's in Uni, it won't be played that much. Watch is a good suggestion but I feel a smartwatch fulfils everything.

Even a hoverboard is not legal in Australia. Hence, I feel ill wait until something good comes along, I don't want to give him cash but rather buy him something.

I'm still open to unique stuff, something cool haha!

    • +1

So, I was thinking of a drone but this is I think too early to invest in one because of the exponential growth we're seeing in the industry.

The same applies to PCs, but one can still make use of a new PC in the present.

      • That is a good idea: A 2 in one PC Tablet, good for uni, good for spare time. Tecky too

    • +11

"Console is useless as he's in Uni, it won't be played that much."

      giggles

      • Lol must be one of those students…

    • "Console is useless as he's in Uni, it won't be played that much. "

That's what you think. So many people I know at uni including me had consoles. Believe me they are the best. They will be used. I prefer to play on my PS4 console over my laptop/pc.

  • Does he need any tools or equipment for his hobbies?

    Is he into any sports?

    • Haha he got no time for sports tbh cuz engineering!

      • Which stream of Engineering?

Could he use a tool box/chest?

        • Haha not really. Petroleum is the field.

        • @Scrooge McDuck: No, he studies in India. He's visiting.

        • +4

          @namankumar1282:

          So no tool chests then!

No, he studies in India. He's visiting.

You might want to add that to the OP.

        • @ProBoDoBo:

          Petroleum is the field.

Gold or chrome plated 5, 10 or 20 litre jerry can? Symbolic, and would cost a bit to get custom plated. A bigger version of those 5oz hip flasks you see at those smoker's shops. You could fill it with booze to get it close to the value you want.

      • Maybe a dremel?

  • +1

    Skydiving voucher

    • +1

Attach this link to the voucher:

      http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-15/two-dead-in-sydney-sky…

Have to admit it's good fun though! Can't think of anything even close to the amount of fun it is!

      • +1

People also die riding the bus, beaten senseless while strangers look on and do nothing. Skydiving sounds like more fun.

        • +4

The thought of the parachute not opening is something that sits on the back of my mind each time I jump.

But then I think what you think about other people dying elsewhere and just slide my butt off the side!

        • Imagine buying a present that causes someones death? I'd never be able to live with myself.

  • +3

    hooker

    • +1

I jokingly/seriously offered this to my son for his 21st. He didnt speak to me much for a while, he was mortified!
