Xiaomi Mi4C - Second sim not getting a signal unless toggled from mobile data in settings

Hi all,

Just wondering whether any of the tech savy ozbargainers may have heard or been affected by this on their Xiaomi Mi4C.
I have posted on XDA forums and a few others, but thought i'd try and see if anyone from Australia has noticed this problem as well.
A few days ago this occurred. At that stage I had CM13.1 running. I had not undertaken any new updates.
On Monday I was able to receive and make calls with both SIMs.
On Wednesday I noticed that the second sim wasn't showing up with a signal on the home screen. I think the problem may have started on Tuesday, August 1. Does that date ring a bell with anyone as to any changes that were occurring with the telecoms? All i can find is that Optus stopped 2G.
Researched and checked the hardware which all came back as OK. I switched the sims into another phone and they work fine on them.
I am now on LOS 14.1 and still face the same issue.
I have noticed that if I toggle off or on the mobile data between phone providers this will allow phone signal to be established, but I lose the signal in the other sim
has anyone experienced anything similar in the past?
If so, would anyone be able to assist in resolving this issue?

Its likely the result of the 2g network shutdown.

  • 2nd sim slot is probably 2g only like many of them

  • Anything that could be done? Or am I stuck with a single sim phone now?

    • Nothing. 2g network gone. Wont be receiving 2g signal.

If one sim slot takes microsd card also. Then there you have it. Memory card slot.

    • Some phones (notably S7) had the radio hardware; they just needed a firmware update. Your Mi4C is probably not one of them.

All you can really do, if you need this functionality, is either buy a cheap second phone or buy one of the dual-3G phones that support 3G on the standby SIM.

  • Time to upgrade to a newer Xiaomi device.

Had a look in the Mid-range Android phone poll??

to my knowledge, most, if not all, of the Dual sim phones listed there can do 4G SIM1 and 3G SIM2.

    • fixed link now.

  • Thanks all for all the info.
My Xiaomi is only 8 months old and works a treat for what I use it for, and now with LOS14.1 and safetynet enabled I won't be upgrading for a little while. I still have my old 1st gen Moto G, which still works great too, so I'll stick my second sim in that. Will feel odd to carry 2 phones around after 3 good years of having a dual sim phone!
Will keep an eye out if the Xiaomi Mi5 or any of its variants go on special particularly on 11/11 - Ali express day since thats the day I got my Xiaomi MI4C for a great price!

  • Try this app called 4g LTE switch
It let me use my s7 edge sim 1 in 4g/3g and 3g for the second SIM

    • Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately my phone's second sim can only do 2g, so I'm out of luck with using it as a dual sim.
I've never thought of using the second sim space as a SD card a lot though. Is this something that would work with this phone? All I have to do is buy a micro SD card insert and I get additional storage space?

      • The second SIM slot usually always doubles as a SD card slot.

Why not get one of the Xiaomi phones the we're recently on sale.?

        • I don't think the mi4c can take a sd card in it's slot. I noticed that on GSM arena it buts it down as a no: http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_4c-7512.php, and that on the redmi 4x it mentions that the 2nd sim can act as a SD card http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_4_(4x)-8608.php
Someone please correct me if i'm wrong on this.

Re: getting a new phone, also a good idea, but i don't want to spend anymore than i did on my mi4c which was just over USD100 (about USD 110-$115 when i factor in the car charger, glass protection and case) on the Ali Express sale.
