Suitable RAM for my PC

Hi all. Been having a lot of issues on my desktop and think it might be RAM related.

Was wondering what type of RAM do I have to get to suit my system, and go-to place to get it? e.g. does it have to be DDR3.
Is getting second hand worth it?

Specs:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz
- GIGABYTE P67-UD3-B3
- Currently have 3x DDR3 4GB 1600MHz sticks

  • You can check memory compatibility specs of your mainboard. You have 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets, so you can only use DDR3.

Run a few memtest64 cycles to see if it is your memory that is causing issues.

Second hand RAM is usually fine, but you'd want to memtest them first.

    Are you getting random BSOD?

    • Yeah it alternates between normal freezing (monitors freeze the graphics, need to hold power button) and, less frequently, BSODs (a few different ones).

Thanks I should have looked it up. Does it matter which MHz I use?

Memtest gave a lot of errors for every 'test', but I have yet to run on each individual stick.

      Thanks again.

try one stick of 4GB ram at a time, see how PC responds. Repeat for each stick. See if that identifies a bad stick.
if one stick is bad, then 8GB may well be adequate to do what you need to do??

    • I second this

    • Thanks that sounds like a do-able plan! (even for me)

    • I just tried this right after my PC crashed a few minutes ago.

RAM #1: Monitors stay off. Need to hold power button to restart.
      RAM #2: Same thing.
RAM #3: Booted up for a few seconds before it froze again.

After a few goes with all 3 I'm back online.. gonna guess all 3 are duds or something else is messed.

      • did you try different slots? all in same slot? slot 1?

        • All in the same slot. Are they different? I'll try another slot next freeze.

        • @pifts: test different slots to find out if it's the motherboard

  • Kingston.
