Used/Refurb Android Phone for $300

Hey guys, I know this has been asked a hundred times before (and i've looked at the polls)…

I want to upgrade my wifes Galaxy S4, it's getting old and slow (The phone, not her!)….. She's not that Tech-Savy, so it will need to be a used phone that won't break the bank (~$300)….
Needs to be relatively fast/snappy/responsive and have a decent camera.

I'm thinking a S7 or Nexus 6p because of the Brand and I'll be the one to fix it when it breaks.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

The Galaxy S4 is quite a capable phone.

    it's getting old and slow

If that's the only complaint, why not try a hard-reset to wipe everything and it should be back to snappy!

Unless she actually wants new hardware….

I love my Galaxy S4, it has a removable battery, notification led & is a good size, not too big.
I've got 2 batteries, so if I can't recharge it, I just swap them over.

I just replaced the cracked lcd with a new one from Aliexpress for under $50, and now I'm doing some research into updating the rom with a custom one on XDA.

      it's getting old and slow

This might explain why that's happening -

The Nexus 6P suffers from bootloop problems and requires the user to disable processor cores as a work around.

Have you thought about getting a Moto G5 or Xiaomi Mi5? Both are good devices, with decent cameras.

The LG V20 is also a very high end phone that sometimes sells for $400+, during an eBay sale.

The Oppo F1s is also another popular device.

Xiaomi Mi5s is available for around $300 too.

    • I would also opt for a new phone for that price and if not the Xioami Mi5s, there are alot of plenty other options in the Xioami range (or the others Scrimshaw as suggested).

  • Purchased the LG G6 for around $460 for my mum through this deal and so far works flawlessly. Yes it's over your budget but It's something I would consider if I was purchasing for my wife. You may have to hang around for another one of those eBay deals.

For 2nd hand battery dying is always a risk.
Phone batteries have a limited number of full charges (approx 400) before they degrade severely.
If you want to get a 2nd hand either seek one with removable batteries or allow for the extra cost of replacing the battery with a good quality one by a dealer.
I used to have LG G3 was great apart from lack of security updates.
Have a Nexus 6p now, no bootloop issues for me at least.
But cant just replace battery without some tech knowledge.

  • At $300… its gonna be hard to find a Nexus 6P, let alone a S7.
What about the Samsung Note 4 ?
Sure its got a measly 32-bit processor, however, the QSD 805 is the fastest 32-bit processor and roughly equivalent to the throttling QSD 808, QSD 810, QSD 650, Tegra K1, Helio P20, and the QSD 625.

The good thing is that it has a really good screen.
Better than most phones, including the OnePlus 5.
The sides are nice premium metal. The back is a nice premium leather (not crappy glass).
And it has a removable battery and removable microSD card.
Also its a popular phone, meaning there are plenty of accessories out there for it.
It's still got a good community with some decent custom roms.

  • Samsung Galaxy "A" series are cheaper and slightly lower spec while still being as solid and reliable as the flagship "S" series. Still more than fast enough for most people.

I got the Galaxy A3 2017, the smaller "phone-sized" one (though kids these days tend to like the larger screens of the A5 or A7, which are a little more expensive).

My A3 has Gorilla glass 4, IP68 waterproof, AMOLED screen, 2 day battery life, and quite a few other premium features, too. They start around $300, brand new.
