Christmas Trip

Departing Brisbane.

Any particular places that are the usual price to visit? Any < 10 hr flight is fine.

Plenty of flight specials for Nov & Jan, just not Dec.

Seems cruises are available around double the usual price.

I thought Christmas was when family got together so mainly domestic, however seems everything international is popular too.

Something in 23rd Dec - 8th Jan range.

according to census 2016, 28.5% of Australia residents were born overseas

  • This is a very vague question. Where would you like to go?

    • Literally anywhere international < 10 hours flight that's not a BS price

      • budget? BS price is pretty hard to define.
Christmas holiday is when most airlines categorised as 'peak season' so your BS price might be everyone else normal Xmas holiday prices.
Many overseas students will fly back home around that time as well so overseas flight tickets could be crazy expensive

        • What's the market rate for 1kg of bull shit?

      • I vote Japan. 9 hour flight, price is $1600 return direct which although more expensive than when on sale at other times of the year, seems reasonable given you are travelling in a very peak period.

        • Fares all the time for $600 odd. Are there really so many people going at Christmas to Japan the price triples?

Jetstar is almost $1500 return anywhere. Surely a couple isn't going to spend $3000 just to go to Bali for a week on bloody Jetstar?

Cruise seems far better value, base cost is double but the biggest expense in drinks are the same. And they legit probably have to pay their staff more during that period too.

@rochow: I personally have no interest in a cruise - I would rather go somewhere and experience the destination (and not spend so much time floating in the ocean). If you are happy going on a cruise and it seems more cost efficient then sure, cruise away! All airfares are going to be expensive, lots of people want to go on holidays over the xmas break and airlines know they can charge double or triple. The normal Qantas price for Tokyo return is around $900 or $1000, so paying $1600 does not seem too ridiculous to me.

I reckon Tasmania would be nice then and it's overseas.

Put your dates into skyscanner, and put in 'everywhere' as your destination.

Looks like Bali and NZ are your only overseas options sub $1k

    • Those Bali sub $1k flights have pretty interesting routings.
Have to transit through Port Moresby or Darwin and 30 hours journey.

        Lord. Quicker to swim.

        • It will be a world record if you can swim that distance in 30 hours.

  • If you like the big outdoors and historical places, try Vietnam. I visited:

HCMC (starting point for a lot of tourists, but there's only so much you can shop and the city is crowded, and hot. Ate at Shri rooftop bar.
Cu chi tunnels and gun firing range is interesting but it's not really that great. I didn't like the weather very much. I wouldn't stay too long in HCMC: there are much nicer places to be in Vietnam!!

Ha Long Bay (stayed on overnight cruise. Go kayaking around. Visit the floating villages. It's really fun and the sights are amazing).

visited Hanoi's Temple of Literature and other interesting places (e.g the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

visot the picturesque ancient towns of Hoi An and played on the beach. Rent a bicycle and go riding around the town's various alleyways while enjoying fresh food along the way. Go out and enjoy super fresh seafood at some of the beachside restaurants.

  • Yep seems everywhere is triple the price.

I wouldn't have thought many people would be "let's go to Saigon for Christmas" for example. But the prices are way above usual. Something local like the Gold Coast sure it's packed.

Accomm not really, mainly the flights

  • From undercut skyscanner link above, I would suggest Taipei.
Flying China Airlines / Eva Air (full service airlines) for around $1k is a decent price to Taipei for non-budget airlines.
Most place will still open during xmas, people are friendly, have amazing food and good price for shopping.

  • I'm doing a Bali trip the week before xmas, $4.5k for 7 nights for family of 4. One day either side increases the costs by about $2k, so you need to be careful with the date selection.

    • Interesting, I've flown for cheap in December before because no-one was on the flights really. Assumed certain routes basically die, meanwhile some are chaotic.

Bali is $1500/pp for flights atm so that's a no go :(

  • Go to Queenstown in NZ and get your adventure on. Lots for the kids to do.

for $5000 you can have bikies abduct you and lock you in a storage unit for 2 weeks.

    that's an experience…..
