Product Care warranty... Yes or No?

Looking at getting Bosch stainless series 6 dishwasher. (sms68m48)
Two different places I've spoken to have pressed for buying the product care extra, claiming it only has a 2 year warranty.

I originally said not interested, though I have read on here some people are buying the extra product care.
Whats the general consensus on this?

Yes or no?

Thanks in advance.

There is some thing in Australian consumer law about products must be reasonably durable. Ie would you expect an expensive dishwasher to die so soon. They just want the commission on selling the warranty.

The question is how much shop guarantee do you really have.
Considering the item I would expect Consumer affairs to rule 4-5 years assuming it is a name brand.
Those extended warranties are cons for shops to get out of of their legal guarantee as opposed to voluntary manufacturer warranty.

No. Most extended warranty options cover you for the most unlikely periods of product breakdown .

The Checkout covers this topic in a semi humoured way

I would also put in a option of 'its complicated'…

Consumer laws in Australia mean your item should be fit for purpose with consideration for the price you paid…

So a washing machine from Bosch for $2000 might be argued to be expected to last 8 years, so must be covered by the retailer for that period, whereas a BangGood $49 machine really might only be expected to last a single year considering the quality and price paid.

However, if something goes wrong it always seems easier to have the extra care, and this would mean if something goes wrong you would not be fighting an uphill battle which puts most people off… so if your a lover, get the extra care, but if your a fighter than don't.

My Panasonic GH4 camera ran out of warranty by 13 months, and had a motherboard issue. Panasonic fixed it free of charge without a fight at all, very surprising and since then I have purchased 2x GH5 cameras and am confident in their sales and service… On the other hand, Apple don't even bother trying to follow local laws and will fob you off quick-smart…

Lastly, my pro-tip is to buy the item without extra care, but from the better retailer. Ie, Myer/HN or big stores rather than a smaller guy even if the price you pay is a little more.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahaha thanks for the comedy.

Now let's compare attempting to get "extra care" out of a profit seeking entity that you gave money to five years ago (hint: they don't like to give out) with making a Consumer Affairs complaint: it's one phone call to speak to someone who is on your side.

Well there may be a few more phone calls but they'll call you back.

      It costs nothing.

Depends. Before my ozbargain days, I purchased an extended warranty on my plasma TV. A few months before the extended warranty expired, the TV stopped working.

I no longer had the invoice, so I called up Good Guys. The guy gave me the invoice and the warranty number. Contacted them and they came and fixed my TV for no extra charge. I think the warranty was $77, still happy enough that I didn't have to waste my time pushing the issue.

If you have to pay cold hard cash for it, then no. Ask them to throw it in instead.

Only get it if you want to make sure the salesman gets a big commission on the sale. haha

I wouldn't personally opt for it.

I would read the Warranty Terms and Conditions from the Bosch website to ensure you comply and are covered just in case of failure.

Yes if the warranty is from Bosch. No otherwise.

    • Why? (I've had great service from warranty companies when making claims.)

Determine the cost of ownership per warranted year, with and without the extra warranty, then decide. You'd probably do good to include specific product reviews in your decision making.

It's a gamble each way, and of course a business case for the existence of warranty companies suggests the house usually wins, but my own experience has been favourable with choosing the extended warranty for a few items (but not a dishwasher).

As they say on The Checkout: ask them what the extra warranty provides that you are not already entitled to under Australian Consumer Law.

  • No 'product care' has been bought.
Thanks for the input and opinions and help.
If dishwasher doesn't last long past the 2 year warranty….. I'll be pretty annoyed.

    No, dont bother.

Check if the manufacturer offers extended warranty themselves, sometimes its cheaper through the manufacturer than the store if you're looking to purchase extended warranty.

Its a Bosch though, I'd be highly disappointed if it broke in two years.

It also depends on the reputation of the manufacturer and how great/terrible the warranty service is.
