HP 3632 Deskjet All-in-One Printer for $30.60 ($25.60 After HP $5 Rebate) @ The Good Guys eBay

620
PGOOD15

Decent multi function printer, wireless (including "AirPrint") and comes with a USB cable. currently selling for $36 on eBay (free click and collect). Less 15% and it comes to $30.60. Claim $5 cashback from here: https://h41201.www4.hp.com/WMCF.Web/au/en/promotion/16305/Ne…, and the total then comes to $25.60. (and don't forget to use cashrewards to get a further $0.46 or so off!).

It is a small printer (only holds 60 sheets) and not blazingly fast but good for a student for example. Details of the printer: http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/printers/product-detail.ht…
Comes with:
HP 63 Setup Black Ink Cartridge (~115 pages)
HP 63 Setup Tri-color Ink Cartridge (~100 pages)

Standard HP 63 black ink cartridge costs $25 at Officeworks, and is rated at 190 pages.
Standard HP 63 tri colour cartridge also costs $25 at Officeworks, and is rated at 165 pages.

Based on that, it actually is cheaper to buy the printer with 'setup' cartridges (@$0.12 per page) than just the cartridges (@$0.14 per page) themselves.

(and yes you can get XL cartridges that hold more ink and are more cost effective, and yes you can get third party cartridges for half that price etc etc etc - but it still seems insane these things are so cheap)

Good price though it was much better price earlier in this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310503

looks like a different model, the one in your link is HP Deskjet 2130

    • +2

That was indeed a good deal, but it was for a different printer - the 3632 has wifi support for example, whilst the 2130 is usb cable only.

I buy these every 24 or so months …never buy ink for them and toss them in the bin when it runs dry (I very rarely print things)

Works fine via WiFi on the other side of the house no complaints

    • +11

there needs to be a landfill levy imposed on HP for each printer

      • +3

as long as companies keep trying to use the razors and razor blade business model then that's what happens, the fact it's cheaper for me to throw out an entire printer rather than buy a replacement ink cartridge just blows my mind

for anyone that complains about such waste, take it up with HP

        • +1

Surprised to see over 100 page count for these. 5-6 years ago, introductory ink used to print 50-60 pages max even they said 100.
Better value is mono Laser printers I suppose (In case you are fine with blank ink alone). Only thing missing in them is a scanner.
Bad thing is these inkjet printers dont scan if there is no ink.

Is there a cheap scanner option or a printer, which can scan with no ink as well or a dedicated scanner is the only option? For now, I am using mobile apps to scan docs.

        • +1

@Gaggy: I dont use HP software and mine scans fine with no ink, just using Xsane on linux… not sure if it works on Windows

        • @wingwang: When I switch on my old HP printer whose ink has dried out, it comes iwth E on display and ink icons keep blinking. Nothing happens when I press scan button on printer. Not tried to scan from windows though.
Dont use linux, so not sure if there is any option in windows to bypass the ink error mode in printer.

        • @Gaggy: Yep, HP in particular got hit hard with a bad rep for putting in starter cartridges that had virtually nothing in them. Now they are half to two thirds full so actually not too bad. They also went all medieval on people making third party cartridges, then tried releasing different printers with different types of cartridges to fight the generics, but now seem to have given up. They have worked out that enough people buy genuine to easily keep them in business given the markup they put on them.

Agree with the laser printer - although they can take a while to warm up. As for a scanner option - I also have an Epson dedicated scanner which is great, but for everyday receipt scans I tend to just use the printer. Just make sure you have spare cartridges. I buy generic in bulk, and they seem to be fine.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: So there is no way of running scanners on HP or Dell multifunction printers, other than either refilling them with ink or use generics?
I might throw them, which I was trying to resist :(

        • @Gaggy: Some will work without ink, some won't. My old Brother was fine as I recall - but it ended up with other issues. If you just want a scanner, then personally I'd get a dedicated scanner.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: For some reasons, they are expensive. For now, will keep using taking pictures from mobile.

        • Or you could always stump up the extra few cents instead of sending printers to landfill every 2 years just to save a few $$ and then trying to hand off responsibility to the manufacturer (yes I know they also have their part to play). They aren't forcing you to do it and believe it or not it's also in your self interest to have less of this crap accumulating in dumps around the country.

        • @teambigred: Huh? Or you could stop driving your car say because that's my pet hate. I'm only buying a few printers a year, you're out there using a much larger device everyday to burn fuel.

Why won't you modify your worse behaviors?

        • @Diji1:

Who said anything about driving a car everyday? Yeah I own one but cycle 5 days a week - I agree with you on the car front. Still doesn't change the fact you are throwing multiple printers away per year to save what? A cent a page? Seems odd to be worked up about cars but then not over printers.

Car drivers will likely ask why should they stop driving if you won't stop throwing away printers. You're more likely to get them to think about their driving habits if you are trying to do everything that you can to minimize your footprint as well.

    • That's what I do as well, (profanity) buying printer cartridges when printers with cartridges are cheaper.

  • The Canon MX726 is also good value at $54.15 after coupon and $30 Cashback

    • I looked at that (I have a Canon MB2300 which is great) but was turned off by some of the reviews (https://www.productreview.com.au/p/canon-pixma-mx726.html?ra… - obviously need to treat some of the reviews with a grain of salt eg dual complaints about it being really slow and using a lot of ink makes me think they are using it on high quality photo mode), but the killer was it being close to twice the price making it less of an impulse buy. ;-)

  • How much better value is the Canon TS6060 at Bing Lee for $69 after cashback?
My SO prints colour images fairly frequently

    • Well, the separate cartridges in the Canon may be better (with the HP you have to replace the multi cartridge if you run low on just red, for example). The Canon holds more paper as well. Basically I suspect the Canon may be better as it could be cheaper to run but it is more than twice the price. I'd compare the two on features first, see which is better for you/your SO, and then make the call if the Canon is worth paying more for. Frankly, if your SO is doing a lot of printing you may be better off contemplating a Canon MAXIFY (eg the MB2760) or even a colour laser.

      • Thanks for the advice. I don't think she prints enough for that latter sort of investment though. Do you think the print quality would likely be better at all on the 6060?

        • I suspect print quality would be similar - if doing photo prints then make sure using good glossy stock paper and genuine (or really good generic) ink. For the extra money you are getting bigger paper tray (less changing paper), separate colour ink cartridges (possible savings there), and a few extra features like the bigger control screen.

        • @PlasticSpaceman:
The prints are just for educational materials like cartoons etc
Cheers though, I'll have a good think about it

  • Good printer, though im still running my $9 Dell V313w into the ground. =)

Don’t these just come with a sample size ink tank? Though from the sounds of the comments here that might be all you’ll ever need.

    • +1

      Yep - as per description:
HP 63 Setup Black Ink Cartridge (~115 pages)
HP 63 Setup Tri-color Ink Cartridge (~100 pages)

So not full, but fairly decent.

  • +1

This is a good deal for a printer that is often on sale, and I can confirm it's a great printer for the price.

The thing I don't like about this, as the OP notes, and I've noticed it before - that it is actually cheaper to buy a new printer than the cartridges. This simply promotes waste and people throwing away perfectly good printers.

    • Yeah - that I hate. Fortunately this printer uses standard HP63 cartridges which are cheap enough to make it a line ball call, and generic cartridges are out there that then make it more economical to keep.

    • You can buy refills if you don't mind refilling and print primarily in black and white. I buy calidad ink refills for $28 from Woolworths and I can refill my HP 60 black ink cartridge for roughly 6 times. Coloured ink is a pain to refill. I have not managed to get a coloured refill to work so far as the colour output is never accurate.

  • +3

I'm surprised and shocked reading most of these comments, leaving the printer without colour and dry, you never know when you'd need to make a copy of something or print, scan. You can't always run to the local library or a friends place. I have a Canon mg 2560, I think everyone has one by now. I ran out of ink and I bought a refill pack in big w for approx $8~9, it comes with enough ink to refill the black cartridge 4 times and 1 refill of red, blue and yellow. Super easy to get it done yourself, why pay $30 plus for a new cartridge when you can refill multiple times for a fraction of the cartridge cost :)

  • Got one, cheers.

  • Bought one, cheers OP. Our one at home just died so great timing.

  • Any deals for laser printers?

  • Thanks. Got one.

Well, picked up the printer. Set it up - took a little while, but not too bad. Seems to print fine, only issue is scans are useless. Lots of multi-coloured lines (https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/70625/51021/scanned_im…). Have done a search on the interwebs and it seems to be an issue others have encountered with different HP scanners. First response is apparently to make sure you plug the scanner into a dedicated power socket. Hmmm. "Have you turned it off & back on again?". It could be a firmware issue, but I'm thinking it's hardware. Will see if it fixes itself, otherwise it might be a support call, dang it. Fortunately I have another scanner so I could scan the receipt to make the claim for $5….

    • +1

So you have to scan the receipt for cashback on a diff. scanner, lol.

      • +1

On the plus side, contacted HP via their chat line, sent them a copy of scan and what I'd done to check the printer (leaving it powered off for a while so it can 'recalibrate' itself on startup, checking firmware was up to date, scanning from different devices, trying to copy something, etc) and they decided that it was a hardware fault and are shipping a new printer to me. Hard to fault their service. (Yes, I probably could have taken it back to the Good Guys as well but I was happy enough to go direct).

        • Yeah I have the same printer, no problems with scanning here.

  • Just running out of ink on the Epson bought here a couple of years back, so I bought two.

Residual guilt about the insane amount of landfill I will generate.

    Thanks OP!

  • $42.52 for me

    • Ah. The maximum discount is if doing 'click & collect'. I assume you've included postage?

  • I have this printer, it's pretty nice.

  • +2

I have been using HP3632 for over a year now and like most other printers it's a complete rip off. There is no way you can print 100-115 pages even with the full original cartridge let alone the start up cartridge. I do not print often at all..like few pages a month at most but the amount of time I needed to change the cartridges were simply mind blowing ! I have spent about over $500 for the past 12 months with very very minimal usage. Buyers beware!

    • When you do print, are you printing photos? When you say that you have spent over $500 in the past 12 months, at $25 a cartridge - assuming both are replaced at the same time - that means you're replacing them around once a month. And you are only printing a few pages each month…. wow….

Maybe you have a bad printer, but keep in mind that the 100 page (or whatever) estimate from all printer manufacturers is based on certain assumptions as to the amount of ink used on a page. Photos of course use a lot more ink so would go through cartridges way more quickly and are not included in those estimates. Another thing to note is that an ink jet printer needs to clean the nozzles on a regular basis - it usually does this by squirting ink out into a sponge. So if you have a printer that is plugged into power but not used at all, it will still go through ink. It may be better - if you're not using a printer a lot - to make sure it is completely turned off. Then when you use it, you may just find you might need to run it through a self clean.

      • Thanks for your suggestion. I just remember I had to change both the black and colour cartridge probably twice every 3 months and I had to pay $60-$70 each time..something like that…maybe it's a bit longer than 12 months for $500 but what I really remember is that the inks were always running low after few prints….fortunately I didn't have to pay for it myself I can claim through work expenses in my previous company ( even though I hardly print at all ).

Another thing is that every time when I changed cartridge it automatically printed off full page of colour for testing which I couldn't turn it off….

I simply just couldn't throw it away when the ink ran out and buy a new one…i do not want to damage the earth any further ..but on the other hand I totally agree that we need to do something to those companies to stop this rip off….

        • That's really weird, I've had the opposite experience personally.

I've had my HP3632 for just under a year now and found you get a lot of prints out of the ink cartridges. I've only ever replaced the black cartridge once, it was about $25. I mostly print text documents without colour, but have printed some colour images before and they came out fine. I don't use it often but I've printed over 100 pages surely.

  • Great write up, thank you!
