HELP! Sulfate Free Shampoo for Irritated Scalp

The last post I can find is from 2013 so I'm here to ask again!

Recently got keratin treatment done on my hair and I'm deciding on switching to a sulfate free shampoo, not only for effective treatment but also problems with dry and flaky scalp. I usually use head and shoulders dry scalp care but I feel like it's not helping me as much anymore. Scalp gets very irritated after a day so I'm forced to wash it every day/second day.

Thanks so much for reading and I would appreciate any help as I know frequent hair wash isn't very good and it's so much effort..

Female, 20 years old

Edit: located in Sydney so if anyone knows where I can buy it/specific stores let me know!

For irritation and flakiness, try Nizoral or Sebizole 2% Shampoo twice weekly. They do have SLS but ketoconazole, the active ingredient will help to reduce the flakiness.

For the dryness and irritation, you can try Dermaveen Shampoo (SLS free), Moogoo Milk Shampoo (SLS free) or McArthur Pawpaw Scalp Care Shampoo (SLS free) on the days you're not using Nizoral/Sebizole.

Unfortunately, it's a matter of trial and error. Give the Nizoral/Sebizole two weeks to start working and the other shampoos should help quite quickly. All these products you can find at pharmacies.

    • found it at chemist warehouse and looks quite scary haha
do you recommend going to a doctor to get it checked out before i try the Nizoral or Sebizole 2% Shampoo?

My Professional recommendation is to try MooGoo milk shampoo & conditioner, its very popular and has quite a following. Link https://moogoo.com.au/milk-shampoo.html try your local chemists they may stock it

    • I also use moogoo, its quite good.

  • Have you tried using body wash (soap). I wash my short hair twice a day for at least 20 years and no problems. I think using shampoo and conditioner is over rated.

No female who loves their hair and spends money on Keratin treatments would use soap an their hair. Hello oily dry hair.

Try Sukin, they make a nice range of shampoo & conditioners free from sulfates and a bunch of other stuff. Very reasonably priced, can often get on special from Chemist Warehouse - currently $16.99 for 1ltr

L'oreal has a sulfate free range - EverPure Sulfate Free Range

    • I get Sukin on special from Priceline. Good stuff! And it smells nice.

      • 3 for 2 at the moment but might stick to 1 for now before i get more :D

    • I've used L'oreal on multiple occasions and felt that it dries out my scalp so much more compared to H&S. Does the EverPure Sulfate Free Range work any different?

Probably will try sukin and see how it goes!

  • I'd actually recommend against Moogoo as it ended up increasing hair fall quite dramatically for me.

Sukin is a good choice but I actually really like the Organic Care stuff in supermarkets for three bucks a bottle.

    • woah thanks for the input! i have really sensitive skin and always relate to the 1 bad review out of the 1000 good ones. whats the organic care stuff?

      • It's no sulfates no parabens etc and it comes in a few different varieties. It's cheap but it's very effective and has always been quite gentle on my scalp. Plus I only have to wash my hair twice a week with it which is always great :)

        • oh ahah I didn't realise it was the brand. do you recommend the normal one or the dry one? :)

        • The dry one is my favourite.

If you can find L'Oréal Everpure anywhere, give it a go. Not sure if it's been discontinued, but it is one of the few sulfate / paraben free ones that I can use with minimal itch. My next vote would be for MooGoo - it's not just about being sulfate free. MooGoo shampoo includes an ingredient that not only keeps the product fresh, it keeps your scalp flora in check.
I need to go very light on the conditioner near my scalp. And with MooGoo, if your scalp doesn't love it, you'll likely love the scent so much you'll use it as a body wash lol…(moogoo is available in many chemists)
Another choice I discovered a few months ago, through a salon complimentary wash and blow dry, is Kerastase Bain Magistral. It's around $40 per bottle, and is sold at Oscar Oscar and Stephan (that I know of). Try ebay and google shopping search as well. A great fresh citrus scent, a deep cleanse without being harsh, and I kid you not I went for over a week without oiliness, stinkiness, flakes or any itch at all. Like I was 8 yo again 😂 Amongst the Kerastase range there are a few for very sensitive scalps, including Dermo-calm Bain Vital and Dermo-calm Bain Rich. Check out the reviews in online stores.
Cutting down on dietary sugar has really helped my scalp health too.
Good luck mate, I hope you find the solution that's right for you ❤
Edit - no poo method might be leading somewhere along the right track. Skin flora and oil balance can be very important. Sometimes we can wash and treat furiously trying to remove a problem, when the substance we're using is the problem. I discovered 10 years ago that washing my face was causing my acne. Crazy. I switched to the oil cleansing method, and eventually just rinsing and wet wipes. No suds, no toners. And no acne.
No, your face is not your scalp. But I'm just hinting that maybe conventional treatment is not the only road ahead for you. Good luck ❤

    • That last bit about "remove a problem, when the substance we're using is the problem" really struck me. Reason for this is because I am struggling to find a product that matches me and therefore continue to use what may potentially be making the problem worse. Do you know what stores sell moogoo? Checked all my local stores/pharmacists but none seem to stock them

      • Hi mate, the moogoo site has a stockist search - http://moogoo.com.au/stockists
Here in SE Bris I can walk into any shopping centre and find 3 chemists and 2 health food stores that stock it lol. And if I can't find it in a chemist, I ask, and ALWAYS get an answer like "Oh, the Terry White downstairs sells it" - they all know 😉
You're right about the "sulphate free" claims and trying to find your fit, it's very difficult. The girl at the salon told me that the Kerastase worked so well because I needed a deep cleanse, and I continue to use gentle shampoos for my dry hair. I guess in my case I should probably use the kerastase once every 3-4 washes, and moogoo the rest of the time - that would fit me. You'll find something that fits you. Maybe chat with the girls at your salon, but take what they say with a grain of salt - they're there to sell product. Maybe get them to use a recommendation next time you get a cut and wash, and see how that feels for a few days, before shelling out for a whole bottle. But, for me, MooGoo has been pretty spesh, been using it almost 10 years now… You'll find your fit ❤

    • I agree on Kerastase Derma-Calm range. It saved me. Sulfate free shampoos did nothing for me though I never tried Moogoo - did hear good things. Generally I've found I can't use cheap shampoos, head and shoulders is crap. I swear by Kerastase or Shu Uemura. I also agree on going light on the conditioner near the scalp - and you have to be careful with some styling products too - they will aggravate. The pharmacy shampoos like Nizoral mentioned above only work if you actually have proper dandruff / fungal infection. For many of us with flaky bits it's simply just dry skin because we have sensitive skin and you will notice it gets worse with change in weather e.g. Winter.

It's a lot of trial and error unfortunately.

  • This not a women's brand but I find American Crew to be great.
The other scalp type shampoos like Head and Shoulders made my scalp itchy and never fixed anything but this works great. Nice peppermint scent too.

    • sweet! May give this a go. Any clue if stores sell this? Packaging looks familiar haha

      • It's a brand that's only sold in salons.

    • takes me to my email? …

    • Sorry about that. The company is called Ozderm and they are at Drummoyne. They get you to trial products. Web site is www.ozderm.com.au cheers

  • Although claudeal may have moved on from the thread, I'd just like to let her know I was in the Reject Shop yesterday and found some L'Oréal Everclear Sulfate Free "Cleansing Conditioner"… It's one that cleanses and conditions in one hit. There's one for curly hair (bluey-green bottle) and one for other hair (goldy brown) - 245ml pump bottles, $5. I haven't tried it yet, but am hoping it's as helpful as the shampoo I've got.

    • Still here and still searching! I bought the OGX coconut milk shampoo last week and have used it about 3-4 times and unfortunately don't think it's helped my issues at all :( It is a sulfate free shampoo or "claims" to be from the writing at the top. Totally lost as I thought the sulfate was causing the issues

      • It doesn't have to be just sulphate, and OGX might be supermarket crap anyway, I don't know, never tried it lol. You're not lost, you've found another one for the junk pile - that's a step forward 😉

  • How often do you wash your hair? You could try just washing it with water, and let the natural oils moisturise your scalp. Then shampoo every 3rd day or something. I use Nak care shampoo add I find it very gentle, despite not being sulphate free. Stuff like ogx and Pantene is like detergent imo.

    • I wash it every second day maximum or morning for one day and then next day at night depends how the itch is and if it's bearable or not. I try do that at times however I still need to find a shampoo that won't give me the itchiness :/

  • This ones great :)

15% off your first order and free shipping always. I find their postage times great too

    • Looks interesting and reviews are great!

      • I've started using it after nothing else was working, after two washes this one has been amazing. I've just bought the conditioner to try too!

  • Use pure sodium bicarbonate with organic extra virgin coconut oil. Do some research. You will find this combination is superior, rather than using unnatural chemicals. Before using that combination, use organic apple cider vinegar to promote hair growth, and eliminate bacteria on the scalp. Again, a natural product. Research is a must.

    • You don't want to eliminate bacteria on the scalp. You want to balance scalp flora. Much of the bacteria on your skin defends and balances the nasties, like the fungi present in seborrhoeic dermatitis (uber-dandruff) and conditions confused with issues like psoriasis. In fact, some people who try alternative routes, like yourself, have found that emptying a probiotic capsule into a scalp rinse does wonders.
      Balance, not eliminate.
