Purchasing RAM on eBay - too many options & prices - how to choose? How to know if seller is reliable?

Hi

I have never purchased electronic items on eBay. Was looking for RAM for my laptop in local Australian stores but found very expensive. $49 for 4gig

WHile searching, I got some good deals on eBay… there are many dealers for the item I want with varied prices.

The expansive one I found is $33 which is cheaper than Australian local store however, some prices are very low on eBay as low as $12 for the same RAM

Now my question is how to choose a reliable dealer? Is cheap price means faulty or fake item?

Please share your views and experiences.

I sometimes look at feedback scores, number of orders and initial membership year to feel more confident about a reliable seller.

I bought ram from Amazon for my last upgrade.

If you are worried MSY sells ram for a decent price in person.

    • Hi

How do you purchase from Amazon? Do they ship to Australia?

I tried multiple time and at the checkout, it says that can't be shipped to 'selected' address. :(

Please let me know if there's a way?

      • Some items don't ship to Australia. Usually under the price if you are logged in and have assigned an address it can usually tell you if it is "shippable " or not.

Otherwise sometimes when searching products in the criteria section on the left you can tick a box that says "International Shipping/Ships to Australia" and it will give you only products that ship to Australia.

I just learnt this today cool feature.

Look at the seller feedback like all purchases on eBay?

When checking their feedback, have 200 showing. Do a page find for the keywords that interest you. Read the feedback carefully, as they fall into three broad categories:
-Left fb before receiving item (suckers).
-After receiving item but before testing it.
-After receiving and testing to confirm it's legit.

For tech stuff, there's a sliding scale I apply but there's too many variables and it's largely personal. If they're local, at least 99% overall is pretty safe.
    Finally, use Paypal!

Link your item, someone will post back with a proper answer…

Store feedback. If you're looking for a store recommendation, i'd suggest http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/computer.wreckers . The 2nd hand ram I bought from them works perfectly + was a steal.

  • Thanks everyone for valuable feedback…. this will definitely help me on my eBay shopping journey.

Here's the link to the item I'd like to purchase… how you would rate?

    • The RAM will most likely be fine, but you can only know whether it's compatible with what's in your system once you've put it in.

The reason some RAM are cheaper is that they're pulled from working units during refurb. Strip the parts and sell separately.
