Yeah, the $10 ones in the frame you can get from the local chinese shop actually provide decent cooling power and last much longer.
Same happened to me, but it was worth every penny. I disagree with it having to be in your face, I had it at 2.5m away blowing on me while I was sleeping (basically all night long). It kept me cool enough to be happy and it did not bother my wife (again me happy).
At 2.5m away I could definetly feel a breeze good enough to sleep while not being cold.

I am a big fan of Xiaomi stuff but these are poorly.
I have two of these they don't last very long. The wires that carries the current is very thin gauge so be gentle with it. Don't bend the neck at every use, refrain from adjusting it. The wires inside can't take that sort of abuse.
Once the propeller is fixed on the shaft leave it alone. Don't try to remove it or spin it manually. Like all DC brushed motor, the motor plastic end cap is clamped with metal tabs of the motor body shell. But the tabs are extremely stingy short so it doesn't clamp well, when installing the propeller please do not push too hard. You will pop the end cap and the motor will be useless.
The plastic end cap also houses the contact brushes, there is a little play on the rotor/shaft so if you spin it manually, the brushes may get caught in the windings and be destroyed.
So if you avoid doing what I mentioned you should be fine. I repaired the first one which broke, replace it with a thicker wire and it was a pain to extract the parts from the plastic molding. Total waste of time but I was curious to see what was the failure. The second unit survived till now, I avoid bending the neck.
