optus sim on boost? wifi?

My sim is optus.

I want a new handset with wifi.

Boost has a prepaid handset with wifi that im considering.

Will the optus sim work in the boost phone for calls/sms? or does it need unlocking?
Will I be able to pick up wifi in cafes/hotspots (with the optus sim in the phone)?

I read the boost blackberry pearl post from a while back that an optus internet data plan wont work in boost, but im not on or getting a data plan.

Id appreciate if someone could help. Thanks

  • If the phone you buy is from a certain Teleco then it will be locked to them in most cases and you'll need to get it unlocked over the phone if you want to use a different sim. Once it's unlocked it will work for calls/sms's no matter what sim you put in it as it will be unlocked. Wifi should work if its unlocked, as the setting and stuff for Wifi are directly to your phone and not the company your sim is with e.g. Data Plans.

Btw you can only unlock boost phones by calling them, the number to unlock it is here http://www.boost.com.au/help, I'm pretty sure that is how it works but if you want to confirm and stuff call Boost and ask them on the specific phone and Optus sim. If they don't tell you and you think its because you'll use a different company just call back later saying you go overseas alot and need a phone that can use prepaid sims from the places you go. Last part works for me when I was calling 3 about unlocking a phone.

    Hope this was helpful. =]

    • cheers for the tips. and clarifying wifi.

  • +1

Yep, optus prepaid is compatible in boost prepaid phones without the need of unlocking. But just to make sure, when you buy the phone - do ask the sales assistant ;)

As for the Data plans, you might as well just go to a optus store to make sure? Info given will be almost certain to be correct.

    • thanks, as i thought, but i will check.

  • re>> Will I be able to pick up wifi in cafes/hotspots (with the optus sim in the phone)?

WiFi has nothing to do with your sim or your carrier only the capability of your phone to connect to wifi.

Be careful though as the wifi capability varies from phone to phone. Some just constantly drop out.

I can only recommend one, and the only one i have had direct experience with … the Sony Ericsson X10i (not the mini or mini pro) but it is an expensive phone. It's wifi is strong and rock solid.

Do as much research as you can and dont listen to what shop sales staff tell you as most dont have a clue. That also applies with asking about an Optus sim in a Boost phone or whatever. If it is not in writing or they cant deomonstrate it for you then take it as a "maybe" because you will have NO comeback if you find later it doesnt work.

There are a lot of phones that do wifi you just have to give the old google a work out.

    • Yep, Wifi has nothing to do with SIM. If you want your phone to be able to have internet almost (i emphasise almost) anywhere it requires 3G which depends on the phone.

    • thanks, really good advice.
