Have I Unknowingly Helped iTunes Cards Scammers?

Over the years I have bought varying amounts of iTunes credit from classified ads here on OzBargain (only) for 25-40% off face value.

Tonight I was reading about the scams where (mostly) old ladies are scammed on the phone to buy iTunes gift cards and provide the digital numbers to the scammers.

Which made me wonder, by buying iTunes credit numbers here on OzBargain have I unknowingly help scam some old lady?

interesting thought. Truthfullly, you'll never know! I think it's unlikely since most people buy and sell from recognised users that have a decent history on here, kind of like an integrity measure and I don't think the people involved in the itunes scams are going to be building up an OB post history.

These people work on a mass scale and would have betters ways to convert the itunes cards to cash.

Why do you think criminals wouldn't strive to appear legitimate and I don't know why you think free advertising on the 47th most trafficed website in Australia isn't mass scale…

      • Being asked to pay a tax debt with iTunes credit only sounds legitimate to dummies (sorry to all the dummies that have fallen for this).

Back to cheapskate queen's comment, why go to the effort of building up a reputation on OzB so people will trust you to buy off you, when you could lose that reputation in one fell swoop if you're recognised as a scammer? If anything, for them it would be more useful to try and hack an account like Tightarse's.

I had a look at the accounts I have bought from (about 10) and they're all more than 3-4 years old and all still active which is a good sign.

    Worse. You're helping Bieber.

    • Oh hell no. Not helping the biebs.

  • Did you get the physical card?
From what I have read the scammers ask the victim to read the code over the phone.

If you are buying physical cards, it might just be people getting rid of unwanted gifts.

Or getting rid of cards purchased with stolen credit cards.

    • No all codes to avoid postage. Some said physical cards which I got the seller to scratch and send me the code or the photo.

I have had my itunes account locked a few times by apple for apparently using codes purchased with stolen credit cards - they made me feel like the crim and I'm reasonably certain on the last occasion they told me if it happens again your account will be permanently locked. I wont buy another non retail purchased card.

Where did you get the codes from? OzBargain classifieds?

  • Unknowingly? You really thought people "accidentally" bought thousands of dollars of gift cards and you were just helping them out by buying them at 40% off?

OK, a lot of the people selling them are Brodens that stock up when they're on sale (20% off?), but yeah, some people are scammers too!

Don't feel too bad, but now that you're aware maybe spread the word and only buy them direct from retail?

This is the thing for ANY giftcard. No legitimate source is going to sell you a gift card at 40% off their face value.

I remember years ago when I first got Netflix and Hulu. You could often buy giftcards at deep discounts. These people wouldn't be able to buy the codes at wholesale for that price. The could only be stolen

      I'm not buying that.

What about the Harvey Norman BOGOF deals (50% off)? I bought plenty of those. Is Harvey Norman not legitimate?

Or Officeworks had them for 31.7% off about 5 months ago on eBay also. Is Officeworks not legitimate also?
