How did you know I needed 3 bulbs today? And the ones I need are reduced by more than half. Thanks OP!

  • The led downlights seem like decent value

    • +2

I have those from last time, same price. I am very happy with them. They are not super-cool for the daylight one (I think about 4000k), but have a very good light spread and brightness.

  • Gu10 4pk is cheaper at Bunnings (by 10 cents) seems to be an every day price..

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/philips-gu10-5w-3000k-led-globe-…

    • Bought these last weekend from Bunnings, they are on sale at the moment normally $34.95

    • A collage's missus who works at Bunning said Bunning's Philip isnt the same as Wooly's Philip. I haven't be able to test this rumor though

      • +2

Bunnings sells a huge variety of Philips bulbs. Sometimes the bulbs are replaced and sold as the same model but have slightly different (usually better) specs. e.g. A 30 lumen increase in light output and a slight change to the housing.

I'd have to say though that Philips bulbs appear to be the best of what's commonly available here.

Pity they do not work with dimmer switch's

    • +1

can't have it all at this price….

  • Good price on the MR16 4pk. Does anyone know if they are the vented or unvented style?

    • +1

They are not vented - rare breed at this price!

  • instore as well. I saw today

75c adjusted for inflation is at least $1.50 today. $1.50 x 5 = $7.50. LED bulbs last much longer than 5x incandescent and use significantly less electricity.
I'd say everyone got ripped-off in the 80s paying that money for such an inefficient device.

Hmmm… I sense a bit of global warmist rhetoric coming from you. Inefficient device? Who told you that? Al Gore?

      • +1

What about the cost of petroleum used to manufacture the casing? Have you factored that in your comparison?

    • +4

I was a kid in the 80's and my dad used to get light globes for 75c. $7.50 for a half price globe these days is a scam. Thanks Greens.

2 reasons: technology itself is more expensive than a simple filament bulb and electricity costs are fleecing Australians daily. The real outrage should be electricity costs, since that's the bulk of the problem today. I'm ignoring retail margins for simplicity.

At least some of the cost of LEDs today is the circuitry inside it that converts the AC to DC. The other is higher cost of LEDs compared to simple filaments. So that explains some of it. Definitely not all of it. The real outrage should be focused on the fact we pay the highest cost of electricity on planet earth. Including those lovely well-in-excess-of-$1-a-day charges - simply for being connected to The Grid.

One political party didn't cause this. Partly it's the tech being more expensive and the bulk of the shitstorm is the exorbitant scam with the billing that so many slaves are bending over for daily. Political parties themselves are a joke…as if they aren't all fundamentally the same. They don't represent us. They represent their sponsors. The only effective protest is minimising your usage and going off-grid. Disconnect from the thieves. Once doing so, you realise you can use 12V LEDs if you wish. Simpler circuitry. No need to run an inverter either.

Great deal, bought 2 led downlights - cool whites and 18 warm whites. The cool white is a bit too flouro white. The warm white is great. 50% brighter then the halogens. Minimal heat, less power, win win.

These were in the catalogue last week and is a two week promo ending this Tuesday.

The 18W / 2000 lumen bulbs are not on sale and are at their regular price of $24.50. The 13W is the highest power bulb discounted ($7.50 from $15)

    • I wanted the 2000lm too. on sale possibly because theyre 'new'

Another half price Woolworths deal that is still more expensive than the ALDI everyday price. Although ALDI only have their bulbs a couple of times a year

    • Please show me the ALDI bulbs that are 1400 lumens.

    • +1

It's a real shame ALDI don't sell LED bulbs all year round. We should all email their head office now to suggest it.

I've had a few ALDI LED bulbs fail well before their warranty period, so always keep the receipts! It's particularly frustrating when you buy three or four of a specific variety of globe to fit a special light fitting and one of them fails. ALDI will refund it but you can't replace it with a similar looking globe, so you're stuck with nasty looking unmatched globes.

They sell nice looking LED filament bulbs (the new style LED ones that look very similar to old incandesent bulbs) every few months but sometimes they only have a handful of each type of base and design available to each store. We have a chandelier which fits 21 small bayonet light bulbs, which looks atrocious with CFL globes installed. I've been slowly populating it with LED COB globes whenever ALDI have a sale. I considered doing a bulk sale of globes from overseas, but it's impossible to know how the globes will look until they're installed. Some 3W globes are crazy bright while some 5W globes are really dim. Also it would be stupid to order nearly $100 worth of bulbs from China and find out the quality is garbage and they're a fire hazard. So far the only dimmable small bayonet LED filament bulbs I've found that can be purchased in the quantity I need from a reputable supplier in Sydney are stupidly expensive. I fully expect though that in five or ten years as production ramps up they'll be sold almost everywhere for peanuts.

I bought those downlights a couple of weeks back in half price. not sure if the driver\transformer was the issue. The lights were flickering once in a while. Returned it back and found someone to change all my halogen ones to LED ones(6W warm) for free (VEET scheme). Works fine now

    • +1

Transformer. Old style transformers do not always play nice with LED. Philips has special "retrofit" LED spotlights for those. I need them for one of my lights.
