PS Plus Games for August: Just Cause 3, Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry + More (Subscription Req'd)

1260

This month's line-up of games is pretty good in my opinion. For months, all we've had are indie titles and games that we'd hardly play for more than a couple weeks. But finally some good games.

They are as follows:

  • PS4 - Just Cause 3

  • PS4 - Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry

  • PS3 - Super Motherload

  • PS3 - Snakeball

  • PS VITA (crossbuy with PS4) - Downwell

  • PS VITA - Level 22

Unfortunately I already have Just Cause 3 on disc, but it is an amazing game that has you coming back for more each time. Great game, great month, finally!

    Awsome!

Finally a decent month in a pretty lackluster year

    • +7

There's until Dawn this month and Killing Floor 2 last month.
They both have better critic and user scores on Metacritic than these two games.

There's also been LBP3 and Tearaway - both AAA games, or AA games at least. So not my cup of tea but Sony have returned to issuing at least 1 full release title (as opposed to an indie game) for the last several months. I hope, and expect this to continue. I don't see why it can't as there's now several 1st party games they could give away (Second Son, Killzone, Order, one of the Uncharteds, Witness); and plenty of 3rd party releases that are now $15 AUD or lower when on sale (Wolfensteins, Need for Speeds, Trials Fusion, Dragons Age). And then on top of that there are several, now slightly older, premium Indie games - Abzu, Firewatch. From my understanding these are all games that would be well received by PS+ subscribers - in that we have to respect them as being quality releases, even if they're not our preferred type of game, or indeed if we even own them; and that they're now at an affordable level for PS+ to give away for free - they won't be losing sales as the games have already been at the lowest price point for months.

PS+ in PS3 generation was awesome. I noticed that a lot of the PS+ games would be games that were on sale for around $10 to $15 and then might be given away on PS+. And during the latter part of the PS3 lifecycle the costs of games were dropping quickly - so we got Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 not too long after release (well 6 to 9 months), I think that's broadly accurate.

This month is great for me. I just sold my disk copy of Just Cause 3. I'd only played 1/3 of the way through, got frustrated. So that would be a handy game for me to have in my backlog. Maybe i'll give it another crack. And I was just considering re-buying Assassins Creed Black Flag (currently $14 on PSNAU), so getting the DLC for that will probably give me the AC hit I was looking for without needing to buy an AC game at this stage.

So yeah, for me it's a good month and Sony have restored my faith and excitement in PS+ over the last several months.

  • Hmmm… Just turned on PS4 and can only see GoT, Until Dawn, That's You and Don't Die Mr Robot. Are the free games for USA only?

    • +8

They go up usually on the first Tuesday of the month, late at night, so either 1st or maybe the 8th in this case.

      • Thanks :)

    • +2

It's not even August yet so of course they won't be up yet…These are August games not July games :)

Super Motherland sounds like a porno….

  • JC3 is only really worth playing on Pro isn't it? I heard that it gets a decent frame rate on it compares to the OG PS4.

    • +1

Yep. It's near unplayable on the OG. On the Pro it's good.

      • Okay… what does OG mean?

        • +4

          The original PS4.

I didn't find it annoying, lags slightly a few times but hey you're already playing at 30ps

        • +1

Original gangsta… It's a term people thrown around when they mean original, i.e PS4 was the original PS4, now there is the PS4 Pro.

        • +1

Thanks MikeWhitneysHair and brad1601. The more you know…

        • @MikeWhitneysHair: maybe they patched it out maybe you just don't notice because I remember videos showing that it was awful and I recall my son taking over my Pro because he said it was unplayable at times on PS4.

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

I assume so - I really enjoyed it, and know that if the fps was terrible I wouldn't have finished it. If you look at it for what it is and don't take it too seriously, it's a fantastically fun game. A little repetitive towards the end, but lots of fun trying new techniques to take people/hardware out.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Last time I played it was about 6 months ago and it was near unplayable then. Guessing they patched it since then.

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

It probably was shit but I didn't know any better! The game is so fun you can look past it IMO. Also once you go PS4 Pro I imagine it's hard to go back!

        • @GunnerMcDagget: According to everyone on WP it's still shit on the old PS4 and it hasn't been patched.

      • +4

It's not near unplayable. It may not run superbly but it's totally fine on the OG.

    • I didn't like it on PC. I was getting more or less 60FPS (more less) but it was just a shitty game.

Shame JC3 runs like arse on a base PS4. I guess if performance doesn't worry you much then you'll be fine. Also it's a bit lame that they're offering Freedom Cry instead of ACIV. It's just a standalone DLC.

    • JC3 runs a lot better on the Pro apparently.

  • Great games for PS+. I have Just Cause 3 on disc, but it is a great game. Looking forward to AC: Freedom Cry as well.

  • I always find it ironic that as someone who loves playing Indie games, most months for me are great. In comparison, this month seems pretty terrible. A super old game and DLC for a super old game..?

I think the best game here is actually Downwell… Grass is always greener hey. :P

    • +1

Maybe PC is the best platform for you haha ;)

    • In what world are you living in where Just Cause 3 is 'super old', because it's definitely not the real world?

      • Almost 2 years old…

For context, No Man's Sky, Doom, Ratchet and Clank and a number of other games have come out AFTER Just Cause 3. And those games (in my mind) are also pretty damn old in light of Crash Bandicoots, Horizon Zero Dawn's, Persona 5, Nier, Nioh etc. all of which are recognised as higher quality games.

        • +4

It's still an AAA game under two years old (it came out December 2015 so it's a year and a half not two). For free, I'd say that's pretty good.

You're talking about all AAA releases that came out in the last 6-8 months there. If you expect the developers to let Sony distribute them for free already, you're deluded.

        • @BradH13:

Eh, it's hardly a AAA game to be honest. In terms of reviews it's considered a fairly average game, I'd much more consider it a b-tier type game (even though it may have had a AAA budget).

I suppose it's all about context/perspective. For me, if it's edging close to 2 years old and for me it's pretty damn old especially as console cycles go. I've almost certainly played it if it's a good game, and in a fair few cases there's many more games I'd prefer playing than a 2 year old or even 1 year old game.

In the context of 100 years, yes, 2 years is not old at all, and I can see your point that it may be considered relatively new, but for me I just can't get excited at the prospect of playing an average "AAA" game from close to 2 years ago. Like I said, in light of Crash Bandicoots, Horizon Zero Dawn's, Persona 5, Nier, Nioh etc. that have come out recently, why would I be wanting to play Just Cause 3 unless I'm on a super tight budget and just can't afford to buy any of the newer games.

Just don't understand the typical "WE NEED AAA GAMES ALL OF THESE INDIE GAMES ARE CRAP" view, and everyone gets excited when an AAA game comes out even though it's considered lower quality than many games people trash in the interim months.

  • Nooooooo I bought JC3 a few months back (yet to play it).

    • +1

Hahahaha! You and me both, buddy! Mine's still wrapped in plastic. In fact, I have JC2 in plastic as well, because a few months after I got it on the PS3, Steam had a sale, so I bought it on that.

      • +3

I'm waiting for the inevitable apocalypse that will allow me to live in my bunker and finally finish every game.

        • +1

Or at least take the shrink wrap off of them :P

  • Sweet always wanted to play freedom cry after getting 100% in black flag.

  • Great line up..Like most already have JC3 and I haven't played it yet (hello back log of games)..So whatever. But it's nice to see some good games here :D

  • Wow i will actually play JC3

  • +1

Objectively: (profanity) yeah, 2 great games in addition to another AAA last month and a couple Telltale's recently and yeah, glad PS+ is being good again for the first time consistently in a while.

Subjectively: (profanity), I already own Borderlands, Until Dawn, Just Cause 3, Freedom Cry, and Game of Thrones. God damn it.

  • +1

I almost purchased JC3 the other day but didn't. Stoked. Two or three great monthly lineups in a row!

  • Woohoo… JC3 is one of those games I've been right on the edge of buying for ages!!

  • +2

I would highly recommend PlayStation Asia here. Just Cause 3 was PS+ free game already in Asia. Also I got Darksiders 2 last week and will get Amnesia Collection next week, just to name some recent examples. Generally PS Asia has better lineup than PS US/EU this year, and it takes very little effort to create an account and takes less money to subscribe (~AU$42/year).

  • Not included in this announcement, but That's You is available for PS+ members all the way through to October 26th as well.

  • Super motherload is also crossplay, confirmed by the developer themselve(s).

  • Can confirm JC3 runs very well on PS4 Pro. No detrimental performance issues. You're in for a treat RICO.

  • The good games come just as the price of PS+ increases.

  • New to PS4 here (bought a pro last week) for my son's birthday - upgrading from PS3.

Are theses full versions of the games that you get to keep for ever?

And also what happens if you need to delete games off the HDD, do they
stay on your Playstation account to re-download in the future?

    Thanks,
    Ray

    • Yes, as long as you subscribed to PS+.

Yes, you can redownload deleted game.

  • Yes subscribed to annual plan.

    Thanks for explaining.
