Twitter has just started to ask for phone number, and I don't have option to skip or use another email.
Anybody know how to get around this?

Did you verify your email ?
They usually do that when your account has been flagged for abuse.

Email has been verified. I have had this Twitter account for a few years, never had a problem.

I did change my Twitter @name, would that cause this? Still dont know why it is forcing me to use phone number and no other option.

They want to 2FA you. Many companies do this now. Eg Facebook, Gmail, etc
Perhaps they've noticed suspicious on your account or seen some unsuccessful login attempts?

Or maybe they are just slowly updating all users to 2FA for improved security.
All I did was change my username and then this happened.
It looks like that triggered it, but why have a feature on a site that lets you change your username if they are going to automatically accuse you of doing something wrong.That's one way to think of it, but on the flip side, any account change could be an indication of account takeover.
Perhaps they are being overzealous in this case, but they are just trying to keep your account secure at the end of the day.
It's a tough balance of security vs customer inconvenience.
Yeah stop using twitter.
