The price is good, <$40 a GB but I'm unwilling to risk endless possibilities.
Or it can just store all of you and your wife's dirty videos.

Yeah. Gb = Gigabit, GB = Gigabyte
The USB3.0 standard bumps the max theoretical transfer speed up to 625 Megabytes per second. Actual throughput is obviously a lot less than this, with a maximum real-world rate of about 400MB/s.
That being said, I've only heard good things about the LaCie Porsche Design range, and 5TB for <$200 is pretty good.
