Optus 25% off - any advice?

Hi,
I'm currently on an optus $30 p/m post-pay, with a BYO phone.

I'd like to upgrade to an S8+. Optus have sent me a 25% off for new services. I have a few questions;

  1. Can I port my existing number in any way? I'd really like to keep it
  2. What's the deal with the phone leasing (as opposed to owning the phone)? It irks me, but I'm not sure if it should.
  3. has anyone got any better deals from optus?

  • 1 - You will be able to port your number, given you are coming from a different carrier
    2 - Leasing works out slightly cheaper in the long run… but at the end of the ~12/24mnth contract you don't receive the phone, you swap it over. I personally like to keep the phone at the end. Also note that if you swap early there is usually a fee.
    3 - Depends how much you're paying and the plan the 25% off is applied to? But I doubt many are getting 25%, so it is probably on par as the best available optus plan.

    • The above is slightly inaccurate:

      1. You are with Optus so you will have to port your number out then port back in, this is simple and it can be done on the same day normally however do it mid week just in case. Buy a $2 sim to port to.
      2. With Optus you have the choice of paying $99 up front and leasing the phone and you can swap it for a new one every year, great if you need a new phone every year. I elect to pay off my phone however Optus have a great deal at the moment their $130 plan which has 30gb a month, includes international phone and data if overseas it is $100 on sale at the moment and they are even offering the extra 25% off this so $75 per month for 24 months ($78 if you want the iPhone 7plus), you keep the phone at the end of the 24 months.
      3. It is 25% off all their plans.

      I don't work for Optus I just have looked into it as I would like a new phone however I have until November until my plan is up and I can't avail myself of the extra 25%. If anybody knows of a way around this I would be grateful if you could share.

      • 2 - I wonder why they didn't include unlimited international calls, when it has unlimited roaming calls … seems counter intuitive.

  • +1

    I signed up to another month-to-month BYO plan and ported out my current number to back to get one of the EOFY 25% offs.

    I assume you'll have to do something as roundabout as this current offer is for adding another service to an existing account.

    the most current offer http://optus.com.au/25OFF ; note that the 25% off applies only to the plan portion and not the phone repayments
