Preferred: 14" -SSD/eMMC Hard Drive, >=4gb Ram, great responsive keyboard

Nothing comes mind for a budget under $400. Might have to utilize Amazon to get some Chromebooks which are not typically sold in Australia.

Yes, if you google Neverware you'll get a link to download a specially curated version of the OS that installs on specific laptops. It is not guaranteed to work on any model because it has specific drivers. You should only do this if you tech savvy and know how to troubleshoot linux Os.

Check out some of the better Chinese laptops in that price range

Jumper EzBook 3 Pro & Chuwi Lapbook 12.3 can both be picked up for ~$300aud including postage from GearBest and should fit your needs. They both come with Windows 10, but you won't be able to run ChromeOS on them.

  • If you want something decent, you're gonna have to hit up eBay/Gumtree and look at the used market.
Otherwise you're looking at new laptops with specs: Intel Atoms, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 32GB eMMC, 1366 x 768 resolution screen.
Or if you're lucky; a 500GB HDD (slow 2.5" 5400rpm) and 1080p screen with bad viewing angles, for new.

If you go used, you could potentially get a Core i3-U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1080p IPS screen.

  • As a post-graduate student my requirements were similar to yours and I ended up purchasing this from Ebay: HP 250 G5 I3-5005u 4GB 500GB 15.6-Inch Notebook for around 380$ during October 2016.

Positive: CORE i3, 500 GB HDD, Windows 10, decent battery, also has a DVD drive
Negative: Screen size 15.6", not portable enough, okayish keyboard.

All in all it gets the job done and it's quite a decent find for the budget I had.

  • Firstly, a budget of 400 is too low for a brand new decent laptop unless its a chromebook.

Have a look at Australian Computer Traders for a refurb. They got an ebay store too

I got a refurb SFF PC a couple weeks ago for a multimedia PC. Works fine. Added my own SSD and its great.

  • What would people recommend for a budget of $600? Just needed for internet and downloading movies, netflix etc. Preferably 15 inch screen.
