  • How much dimmer would this be compared with 2X Metal Halides that I currently have?

    • I'd only be guessing but I'd say it'd depend on the output your metal halides. if you find out the lumen level of your MH - you'd find out which is the lower.

    • I've got something similar to this for my 60cm tank. I really wouldn't consider something like this if you are planning to grow anything in your tank that requires medium to high light.

It's certainly a downgrade from your metal halide. The only reason why I would switch to these is for cost saving in the long run. If it's too dim you can always get 2 units or even 3, which is probably still cheaper than metal halides in the long run. But if you are looking to buy that many, i'd personally recommend something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MarsAqua-Dimmable-Full-Spectrum-1….

They have adjustable brightness with different channels for blue light and white light. I havent got the exact ones as these, but I've had 2 similar units and it has been running for 3 years without a hitch. Huge savings since bulbs don't need to be replaced nearly as often. Only downside I see are the fans that make noise

    • LED's are more than capable of good growth and many marine hobbyist have switched to them over time. However, these ones I would say wont be much good for anything other than a fish only or maybe some softies. Depends what you want to do with your tank which with Halides I'm guessing you want growth.

I use Maxspect Razor LED system above my 2ft cube reef tank and get awesome growth even with Stoneys. There are some awesome LED systems out there that have timers to mimic the sun pattern and other cool stuff but again comes down to what you want to use it for. LED's are well worth the investment over the costs of Halides

  • These LEDs should be able to handle most plants.

I was able to grow some most plants with my own Beamworks lights. I had less success with things like HC.

Also depends on how deep your aquarium is, what plants you have, and whether you are injecting CO2 + Ferts. Too much light causes imbalance = algae.
