How Do I File My Income Tax for This Financial Year?

Hello Ozbargainers,

I used to file my income tax returns through a Tax Filing agent and I don't think it's good to do it through them this year again as I don't know what are deduction that they are adding in and etc.

I don't find any better videos or website where I can learn myself on what should be claimed and what not to be.

Can anyone shed some lights on it?

Cheers,
Sowny

You can your myGov account by linking ATO service to it via your TFN. And then lodge your tax return through that.

  • As PLA said, myTax!!

i think the op is trying to find a more beneficial way of maximizing their return?

just look at the hard copy for what they have added in your deduction?

don't know what job field you are in, but there's only so much you can claim if you don't have any investment/business expenses.

Ultimately you are the one who signs off on your tax return so I would be worried if you had no idea what claims your tax agent was making…

wait a minute, you dont know what you deducted last time with your tax agent?. silly question here, i assume you sat down with your agent, did he not ask you questions?.

    • This, or to assume further, you actually read the completed return the agent had prepared before you signed it?

      • I know what he has claimed for me last year but, I don't see the right description against each claim. i.e Other deductions = $100.

  • It's pretty easy, I've done itinerant work and navigated it two years in a row now. Google what questions you have, whirlpool is a good tool.

  • I'm a software Engineer and I used to Work From Home often so what are things I can claim?

    • Electricity, internet, home office equipment purchase such as desks, chairs etc as an example.

I'm not sure if the electricity/internet bills have to be under your name for you to claim as a deduction on your tax return…i.e. What happens if you love with your parents and the bills are under their name and you work from home every now and then?

      • I think you can still claim for electricity as long as your bank statement in the same address.

        • Ah ok yeah

        • @PLA74: I even heard that you can claim some % of your mobile phone and bills if you are using them for office purposes.

        • @Sowny: Correct yes mobile phone usage for work purposes you can claim different ways (depending on how you pay for your mobile phone i.e. if its on a post paid plan or pay as you go etc…) according to the ATO website.
