Australia's Cheapest .com.au Domain Name - $19.95/2 year from Solidinternet

110

How much does it cost to register a .com.au domain? It can be $140/2 years from MelbourneIT, or you can register one at Solidinternet for less than $20/2 year. They claim to be "Australia's cheapest .com.au .net.au .org.au" however for .id.au they are more expensive.

It is selling under AusRegistry's wholesale price I think so I am not sure how they can make profit from it but I guess it is not my problem :)

Disclaimer: sorry no personal experience with Solidinternet. Just somehow found them to be the cheapest.

  • The price looks good. I think last time I looking for a com.au domain, the cheapest one is ~$40.

But afaik, you cant register a com.au unless you have ABN?

  • You need to be eligible for a domain name too…

Domain names in the com.au 2LD must:
    a) exactly match, acronym or abbreviation of the registrant’s company or trading name, organization or association name or trademark; or:
    b) be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant.

See http://www.auda.org.au/policies/auda-2005-01/ for the full list…

  • Also more than just .com.au

    TLD Min.Yrs Register Transfer Renew
    .com.au 2 $19.95 AUD $19.95 AUD $29.95 AUD
    .net.au 2 $19.95 AUD $19.95 AUD $29.95 AUD
    .id.au 2 $35.00 AUD $35.00 AUD $35.00 AUD
    .org.au 2 $19.95 AUD $19.95 AUD $19.95 AUD
    .com 1 $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD
    .net 1 $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD
    .org 1 $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD
    .us 1 $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD
    .info 1 $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD $14.95 AUD
    .co.uk 2 $24.95 AUD $24.95 AUD $24.95 AUD

"catch" is $10 extra after 2 years, but compared to Melbourne IT prices , thats not really a "catch"

    Thanks Scotty

  • oh great i just paid 26 bucks for 2 yrs with another site just 2 hours ago ><

  • What is the difference between this and the deal below?
    US$4 for .com domain..

    What is the difference??

  • @bionda — This deal is for .com.au domains, whereas the $4 HostMySite deal is for .com domains. A dot AU domain will be nice if your website is primarily targeted to Australians. For example if I am searching for a cheap deal on Google, and I will be more likely to click through to the shops that have .com.au domain because I know I am less likely to land on a shop that's only serving US customers.

@ozpete — Hmm. I didn't really see the "catch", but it is free to transfer .au domains between registrars (unlike .com domains you have to pay at least 1 year of fee to transfer around). Also note that Solidinternet is only cheap for .com.au/.net.au/.org.au domains. No point of comparing with MelbourneIT guys. Their customers puzzle me in the same way Telstra's customers puzzle me — there are cheaper alternatives, guys!

@18Googol2 and @davluong — for .com.au and .net.au domains, you will need ABN, or ACN or a business number from your state registry. ABN is "free" and takes only a few minutes, but maintaining it can be a headache. Most sole traders/contractors would have an ABN anyway, and most registrars actually don't check whether ABN matches with the domain name… However on the safe side it is still a good idea to get a trading name, if you are not registering "yourname".com.au.

  • Has anyone sign up a .com.au domain name with solidinternet recently? I tried to call them on 1300 739 781, but I get reply with a voicemail is full.

    Is this company for real?

  • Doesn't seem to available any more, so please mark as expired.

I set up a .com.au domain with them at the time of the original offer, and tried calling their 1300 739 781 number to ask if the offer was still available, but gave up after 15 minutes on hold.

A suitable alternative looks to be http://www.name.com.au/ , who have .com.au domains for 2 years for AU $20.

    • Yeah I have a .com.au with name.com.au and they are pretty good (part of Bottle domain).
