Need cheapest option for keeping mobile number

Looking for a cheapest option to continuously keep mobile number. I only need to receive calls and SMS. No outgoing or data required.

I'm thinking to get a $2 Amaysim SIM without recharging (can you activate without charging $10 on it?). Then after 365 days port it to another $2 Amaysim (would this work?) or get a $5 Aldi SIM and port it there… then continue this process?

Also just got one of those free $2 Optus SIM. But I think expiry is like 186 days…

Thanks.

There have been MULTIPLE forum posts about this in the last month. I really suggest you use the search option first before posting. There are many 365 day plans out there

    • I've done multiple searches on this but have not found answers to what I'm looking for.

pick the network you want to go with

pick a 365 long expiry prepaid plan

and top it up once a year $10 or whatever it may be.

Then after 365 days port it to another $2 Amaysim (would this work?) NO, because your number is already with that network. theres nothing to "port"

Go for Aldi $5, then when the year is up port to a $2 SIM card (can even get them on specials starting at $0.05) then port back to Aldi $5.
    Max you'll spend a year is $7.

I've looked in to the same thing, and this is the cheapest way I've found.

I've got an (old, spare, unused) Amaysim number that's still been active, despite not having recharged it nor had it in an active device within the last 12 months.

I know it doesn't fit with what they say in the T&Cs; but it's still listed as active, I still get a monthly "Your usage is below $10, we'll add it to next month" email, and when I DID need to use it again recently, there was no issue in putting it in and away I went.

I think the 'number will expire' policy is legacy/outdated info from Optus in years gone by. Nowdays it would cause more cost & problems to deactivate a number, SIM, notify the customer etc, that they must simply just leave it at status quo.

I suppose if you're actively using it for receiving calls, then at least you have an activity record that becomes more proof that it's still in use. But from my experience, it can sit unused quite happily without much risk to you.

  • Thanks guys. Will try the free optus or Amaysim for a year and then see if I can port to Aldi or something else. But seems like I can do all this for like less than 10 bucks a year. Bargain

  • Merged from Cheapest option to hold mobile number when overseas for 12 months

    Hi,
I'm heading overseas for a year (possibly more) and don't want to lose my Australian mobile number.
Will be coming back to visit probably 2 or 3 times a year so will need to use it a little then.

I have a free $40 Belong sim that I haven't used so I can go on the $10/m plan for unlimited calls a 1GB (which will bank up when I'm overseas)
So for the rest of the year I will spend $80 for the remaining 8 months.

Is there anything better that I could go on? I know of some long life prepaid sims, but I like the idea of it just charging my card once a month so I will always have it. A little worried about not being able to recharge and my number expiring.

Frequent question. Aldimobile or Amaysim AYG 365 day expiry.

Turn on international roaming and send yourself a SMS whenever you want reassurance it's still alive.

Switch to ALDI and it'll cost you $5 for one year. Top-ups are $15 and calls are on a pay as you go basis and quite reasonable.

    • Port to a carrier with 365 day expiry.

    • Thanks, sorry for the frequent Q.

    • Also Catch Connect has 365-day plans, but they might have more data than you want to pay for.

I use Amaysim. I'm back in Australia a few times a year.
Top up a monthly plan while I'm there, then go to PAYG and pay nothing for the months I'm away.
