Bank Transfer Clearance Times Via Internet Banking?

Been doing bank transfers and accepting for a business for years.
Usually if its a different bank as long as you transfer before 230 or 330 it would show up over night. Around 2am.
Sometimes earlier at 11pm

However I received a payment. Sender claimed it was done in the afternoon.

1am no sign of it
8am no sign of it
10am no sign of it
1pm it showed up..

Is thus normal?
And it was not a in branch deposit

    Is thus normal?
    no, normally people use 'this'

  • But it showed up right?

  • Wait an extra 24 hours - have some patience.

  • Is it not usually business days for a bank transfer anyway?

  • Bank Transfers are next day; it should be there if they sent it when they said they did.

      Bank Transfers are next day;

Nah - most banks actually have 4 batches per day now. There's a good chance that if you initiate the transfer in the morning, the recipient will see in the afternoon.

The online banking system for some banks might only update overnight though, that's why banks still advertise it as 'next day'.

Australia is suppose to get real-time transfers in 2017 with the new payments platform… still no firm dates though.

      • I was trying to keep it simple; in general transfers made during business hours arrive next day.

Like you said; for some banks it won't appear until next day.

      • I didnt know that there were multiple batches of transfer, oh well good to know, thanks

  • Yes funds have shown up.
But normally it's overnight or 11 pm to 2am clearance

Today's payment wasn't there in he morning. Only at all bout 1pm
Which is the first Time I've ever seen it

    • See my comment above. It's possible the sending/receiving bank had a glitch, hence the delay. It could also be a part of their move towards real-time payments.

    • The interbank payment system has numerous batch runs every day. The timing of receipt will (typically) depend on when the paying bank releases a batch of transactions into the clearing system.

Maybe sender lied because you kept pushing him for an answer. So he told you he did it to get you to back off. Then we made the transfer at a more convenient time. You never know.

    • I did think of that, as they changed their story from paid in the morning to the afternoon, however still was shocked to see it at 1pm, and not two hours before, I thought it might have been a in branch deposit, but definitely a transfer, as I ve got a copy of the recipet, which I guess could have been photo shopped too,

but thats a fair bit of effort

  • Maybe there was an error with the account number eg. Missing leading zeros which required manual correction.

    • Maybe there was an error with the account number

Leading zeros normally don't cause an error.

Errors normally take longer than the timeframe the OP indicated to resolve. Errors usually result in the sender getting the money back and re-sending the money.

  • Once, my bank transfer completely did not show up, and required a trace from the originating bank. A week or so later, the recipient bank apologised, saying it was allocated to the wrong account. In another case, it was a delay of 1 day; as I was about to initiate a trace, it turned up. They were my own transfers, so I know the actual transfer times (no probability of sender misreporting transfer times).

So, it is possible this is what happened in your case, something out of the ordinary. Good thing the funds did turn up, having to initiate a trace is a hassle.

    Is thus normal?

You already answered if THIS is normal or not.

    Remember saying

Usually if its a different bank as long as you transfer before 230 or 330 it would show up over night. Around 2am.

What do you want us to do about this late arrival? Your money arrived. A few hours late. Oh well, case closed move on.

where do I say that I wanted someone to do something about it?

      • You're asking a question you knew the answer to already.

There isn't anything we can do. Sometimes these things are delay for many different reasons, caused by either end.

Did you just want some pity? Really doesn't seem like a big issue. It was delayed a few hours more than normal. Meh.

        • If I knew the answer. Why would I ask.
Unless English isn't your strength, none of my posts are requesting sympathy

@hellohello123: then what are you after?

You know it normally happens earlier, today it didn't for some reason. Clearly it was delayed, but arrived.

If you don't want sympathy for your few hours of delays, then what?

  • The processing times as per the bank would state a maximum of a few business days. But I'm sure you already knew this - hence turning to OzBargain to comfort your feelings.

Been catching the train to work for years.
Usually it arrives at my station at 7:30am
    Sometimes earlier at 7:29am

    7:31am no sign of it
    7:32am no sign of it
    7:33am no sign of it
    7:34am no sign of it
    7:35am it arrived

    Is thus normal?

    • Wow you are funny.
So funny I didn't even get it

      • You didn't get it, because you clearly checked after 7.35am and it had gone!

  • Depends on your bank

    The following banks:
ING, Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, St George, Commonwealth bank

hold transfers made to someone for the first time up to 24 hours … to allow the sender to cancel due to errors etc.

there may be more banks that do it, but these are the ones i know off.

On a side note… from later this year i believe bank to bank transfers will be instant (within 30 minutes) changes are being made across the industry to implement these changes
