Moto G4 Plus vs Moto G5

Hi guys, looking for a new phone for my mum as her Galaxy SII is as good as dead.

Was thinking about one of these:

(1) Moto G4 Plus $268 (https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-m…)

(2) Moto G5 $273.60 after getting Officeworks to offer 5% off the mobileciti price (https://www.mobileciti.com.au/motorola-g5-16gb-grey)

Thoughts?

Would just be after a whole round stable and reliable budget phone, on which she can browse the net, surf facebook, and take photos.

I'm leaning towards the Moto G5 given its a smaller size which would be easier to carry around.

Hard budget of $300.

The G5 would be my pick over the G4+.

Technically speaking though, the SD617 in the G4+ is faster than the SD430 in the G5. But the performance difference is pretty insignificant. It'll still be a pretty big upgrade over the S2.

Both are very good phones, but the size does matter (no pun intended) and bigger displays are easier to use over smaller ones, while smaller phones are more pocket-friendly they aren't as user friendly for people with vision problems.

Also note the G5 is a entry level device,(basic camera and basic processor), while the G4 Plus and G5 Plus is more mid end and has better all-around performance.

    • why G5 over G4+?

  • G5 would also be my pick.

  • Thanks for the help guys, can the G5+ be had for under $300? I'm talking about buying from an Australian retailer..

    • can the G5+ be had for under $300?

if there is an ebay voucher. Right now, your best deal is the one Hamza posted.

Then you might be stuck with just price matching officeworks with MobileCiti, but mileage will vary.

Cheapest G5+ Australian is $331.36 for the 16GB/3GB model with C5OZ code, or go to Officeworks and get them to price beat the $348 which comes to the same $331.36 price. Note that has 16GB Storage and 3GB RAM Vs 32GB storage and 4GB RAM this overseas deal model has which scrimshaw mentioned, incase you were wondering why that overseas deal is only slightly cheaper.

The G4 Plus and G5 you linked to both have 2GB of RAM which is my main concern for both of them, especially if you are using multiple apps and 3GB of RAM will be more future proof. I'm not much of a fan of the G5 myself, the processor is a step down from the G4 Plus but it is newer. If you can bite the bullet and pay the extra $57.76 to get the G5 Plus you'll get a alot over the regular G5: An extra GB of RAM, more powerful processor, slightly bigger battery, slightly bigger display (maybe not a positive for you) and NFC. The G4 Plus has the same issue for the Aus version anyway with only 2GB of RAM, although the processor is decent. I don't see the value of the G5 over the G4 Plus - ideally paying slightly more for the G5 Plus is the best value option I think.

  • Also, why G5 over G4+ then?

  • Had my G4 Plus for around a year, and it's a great 'phone.

I need dual SIMs (personal and work), with one on Optus and the other on Telstra.
I'm in Adelaide, and get equal coverage on both networks.

The screen is easy for my old eyes to read, it's a good weight, and I don't find it too big to use, and I have pretty small hands.

No Android bloatware on it, and it updated to Nougat (Android 7) a couple of months ago.

    Great camera, too.

  • Prat33 grab this G5 Plus for $313.92, the cheapest yet for AU stock.

    • Have a look at this: https://postimg.org/image/mzkik5mnl/

Is the G5+ worth the extra ~$50 over the G5, and an extra ~$72 over the G4+

      ??

      • Just wondering how you get $241.20 for the G4 Plus first of all? It's $268 and not on their eBay store, been out of stock for some time. For $241.20 it would be an okay option, depending on circumstances yeah.

I think it should be $313.92 vs $265.32 vs $268 however.

I think G5 Plus is worth paying $48.60 more than the G5 or $45.92 more than the G4 Plus yes.

For $45.92-$48.60 more you are getting extra GB of RAM which alone futureproofs the phone for longer, a better processor (especially compared to G5), more chance of OS updates to next Android (compared to G4 Plus), NFC (G5 & G4+ no NFC), slightly bigger battery (than G5).

If you could get a G4 Plus for $220-$230ish then yeah might be an argument that would be the better value, despite less RAM and being an older phone. Depending on how much multitasking you are doing and how important that extra RAM is and also if NFC matters or not.

        • Sorry! Just realised that whilst it is listed on Ebay, it is indeed unavailable at Officeworks.

          Ok, fair points.

Do you think the price of this is likely to drop in the coming weeks with the potential announcement of the Moto G5s+ ?

        • @Prat33:

It's possible, however the G4 Plus hasn't exactly plummeted in price since the G5 Plus came out. The G4 Plus has gone from $298 back in Feb to $268 5 months later at Officeworks for example, even in Feb I posted a $259 deal for the G4 Plus AU stock and you can't even get it for $259 right now - see deals, and you also would need to wait for an eBay code most likely. If it followed the same trend it wouldn't be much drop, also the g5 plus has only been out here for about 3 months and the retailers offering the G5 Plus are the same ones that had the G4 Plus and as mentioned we didn't see any major drop there thus far.

        • @hamza23: what are the chances of officeworks price matching the ebay discounted price?

        • @Prat33:

They'll match eBay but not the eBay coupon price. It's against their terms, I won't say 0% but basically you'd have to rely on someone making a mistake.
