Qantas Asked for Verification When Doing Points Transfer

So today my partner and I were booking a holiday and we decided to pool our QFF points

When i filled out the transfer form, it all seemed to go to plan, however the points did not credit immediately
about 10 minutes i got an email from Qantas directing me to their website via a link, i had to upload ID for myself and my partner verifying we both lived at same address.

Seems like its random though, my next door neighbor did a transfer yesterday did not get the verification step.
a co worker who has done multiple transfers, said she got verification request recently.

just thought i would share with the community.

Have you or your partner done any transfers before this one?

    • yeah we have

Qantas do audits when accounts have had too many transfers. How many is too many no one knows. Best to keep transfers to a minimum.

yeah maybe… but from what i can see from other forum sites (including posts from staff) its happening to people who have points transferred once.. and those who have done it once a year for 10 years… there is no system to it.
It appears to me they are cracking down on people selling their points (which i would never do)
Virgin have even changed T&C's to state transfers must be verified family members, so it seems to me they are wise to all the selling/trading going on and are making moves to stop it.

appreciate you sharing the information. It may be their way of reducing the fake family transfers. Bugger

  • Transferred to my son 6 months ago. Same surname, diff. address. No probs.
As you say 'partner' I would assume different surname?

    • yeah different surname
Co-worker transferred to husband with same surname and got same verification request though.

  • It's to stop illegal buying/selling of points I'd say

I know what you mean but just thought I'd point out that this isn't illegal

This is the danger of buying/selling points on the Ozbargain forums!

did you miss this "my partner and I " ?

Haha yeah I saw that take it easy, I meant for other people on this site who buy and sell points.

  • Employees of Qantas, Amex etc are probably reading the forum too and so lots of good things are brought to an end.

As I understand it, points brokering and trading has been around almost as long as miles programs. They are aware that this goes on but unless they are running sting operations and finding out sellers/buyers account numbers, it really is a needle in a haystack of transactions ( though i presume its much more prevalent than needles in haystacks).

If they get really paranoid, they could remove the feature to transfer points, however taking 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' strategies may end up being economically damaging as people lose confidence in the value of the currency and move to more flexible programs like the credit card reward programs or overseas airline programs that seem to be moving towards being more flexible in transfers and buying points. Thought maybe they think they have a captive market here in australia that will put up with as much devaluation and gouging as they want.

  • Don't know how they could prove anything. A step child could have a different surname and a different country even. Photo I'd with address won't prove in law or step relations.
