City2Surf Bib Postage Issue

I'm interested in opinions on this trivial issue.

For those unfamiliar with the City2Surf (and other similar races), you need to wear a bib with a number while you run. If you sign up early enough or pay for postage then this will be sent in the mail beforehand. Otherwise, you need to collect in the days prior at Darling Harbour, or early in the morning on the day of the race (which is a pain in the arse).

I signed up for City2Surf two months ago with bib postage but it appears my bib has been lost in the post. I've spoken to the City2Surf people who have told me it's bad luck, and I need collect it via one of the channels above. This is a big deal for me as I live two hours out of Sydney.

Where do I stand in terms of consumer rights? Aren't they obliged to provide what I paid for? I'd demand a full refund for my entry but I really want to run. Travelling to Sydney the day before will be expensive and time consuming, and it would be a nightmare to collect it on the morning of the race. I'm also entitled to free public transport on the day of the race with my bib (I normally get the train there), but I'd lose that if I had to collect the bib in the morning.

Can you organise to get a friend to collect for you given your extenuating circumstances?

    • I could collect it myself on Saturday, but it would be a whole day wasted and I paid to have it posted to me

you mean, you can pick it up before the actual race at the place where you will be anyway?

    • Haha, yes, but it's a pain in the arse. 85,000 people run and the crowds are horrendous. I'd have to get there an over and hour earlier, which means getting a train at 4am.

  • Or is it you're worried about not getting free public transport there?

Look I'm all for consumer rights but this is a charity event. It's not their fault Australia post is useless and the bib got lost in the mail… Nor in my opinion is it fair to go after them demanding a refund for the postage or a refund to run in the race. I'd be willling to bet that Aussie post wouldn't have donated postage or if they did it would be without tracking.

I understand it's slightly different for you given you live far away but at the end of the day they wouldn't have resources to go around chasing aus post for the money back.

Perhaps you could go to Sydney the night before and stay in a cheap air Bnb or something or crash with a friend.

    • Thanks for your honest input. The city2surf does raise money for charity, but at the end of the day it's run for profit. Fairfax run several other events, including the SMH half marathon and canberra running festival, and I doubt they do this for altruism alone

but this is a charity event.

      No its not.

Its a for profit, where people can raise money for charity.

  • Can you get somebody else to pick it up for you from Darling Harbour and then post it to you?

  • I signed up for City2Surf two months ago with bib postage but it appears my bib has been lost in the post.

what does the online tracking show?

    • There's no tracking. I was told that postage is done by a 3rd party, so it's out of their control

      • There's no tracking.

no tracking. so they have neither pos nor pod. that is good. it makes it easy for you to do a chargeback and win.

        • I considered that but I still want to run. Unfortunately they have me by the balls

tbh i cant sympathise with someone who paid $77 to run 24km.

That said, the T&Cs say that they will be posted, which they did. Whether or not it arrived isn't their problem. TBH i think you;ll hve to get there early.

    • It's actually only 14kms

      • +2

        Even worse $/km rate :(

OP should be banned from ozbargain ;)

    • Agreed. I swore a couple of years ago that I'd never do it again but I'm a keen runner and got persuaded by my wife and running buddies.

They haven't actually proven that they posted it. They just confirmed the delivery address.

No tracking number, no proof of postage

You can pick it up on the morning of the run from the North end of Hyde Park. I've done this the last couple of years.
    Problem solved.

    • I know, but it means getting a 5am train to arrive at around 7am. Is that early enough?

      • +1

Well you did pay to get beaten physically…. And now you get an extra hour for free :)

Plenty early enough. I usually catch the train down from Newcastle and get my bib on the morning. The queue is usually only 3-4 long. A couple of minutes and you're done.

        • Thanks for the reassurance. It looks like i'll have to do that. The city2surf organisers are being complete jerks about it (rude emails with no explanation etc).
