Hi fellows,

special benefits i mean. I have about 5 grand in my bank account but dont want to spend it now as i may need it later. Does centrelink want people to finish off their money first and then they help or they just pay when you say you are in financial hardship?
You probably want to read up on here:
https://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/centrelin…
In particular, they have an "emergency" hotline to call for this benefit specifically: 132 850 (although only for emergencies happening M-F, 8am-5pm)
There seems to be a $5k savings threshold for long term claimants, but short term claimants are different (but you need to talk to them to find out by how much). I would talk to them sooner rather than later though. Don't wait until you're bone dry.
I read somewhere they will keep paying you until you have assets liquid or otherwise up to some crazy figure like $150,000 or something.. was on the Centrelink website wait let me go find it.
Edit: found it it's actually higher

@AlienC: Yes over 50% of Australia's population receive welfare of some type from duh gummints. We're a socialist nightmare.
You will be right, bro.
They will make you do an assets test. If you score over the threshold, you will have to wait a certain period. It all depends what you write. Honesty is the base policy. ;)
They might schedule you for a robo-tudgeing later.
what's robo-tudgeing?
Look up "robo-debt" and "Alan Tudge".

Special benefits? They're for people who are in a real shitty situation and it's not even a high amount that you get. Why don't you preserve your dignity and go try improve your lot instead of looking for quick fixes from Centrelink? I assure you, those who genuinely need to claim special benefits won't be asking whether Centrelink wants them to finish off their savings first.
What's wrong with wanting to claim special benefits from centrelink? They exist for a reason. And if someone is eligible to receive them then there is nothing wrong with asking questions to find out their eligibility. Of course it is not a requirement for everyone to claim if they feel that they don't need it but people with the intention to claim shouldn't be looked down by others.
Centrelink is too lax on people using benefits for frivolous things. Centrelink benefits should be held on a card that can't buy ciggies/booze/gambling products.
Even if they implemented that measure it would never work. People would still find a way around. For example - selling credits on the card in exchange for fiat money for ciggies/booze/gambling.
@armdrags: adds one extra hurdle and makes taxpayers happier
Whaaaaat? you're here on Ozbargain and you wouldn't claim what you're entitled to?
Instead of receiving a thanks for the taxes I pay each year, they're still trying to take more from me! haha
I wouldn't do anything dodgey, but if I was to fall within the eligible guidelines, I'd be claiming it without a doubt! (Although, I've yet to meet any of their criteria so far)
(Btw I didn't neg you - I can actually see what you're trying to say! lol)
What benefits are you talking about? Some are basically free money, others have some catches attached to them.
