1.5L Dr Pepper $1 @ Reject Shop

531

Bought a bottle today to find it scanned as $1 after being listed for $3.50. I went back to grab more and the store bloke told me it has to be cleared from all stores due to being banned for sale in australia in a month or so.

What is the reason for the ban?
(anything aside from it being filled with toxins?)

    • No idea.

    • anything aside from it being filled with toxins?

    • OMG……you won't believe the reason……because it contains 'Caffeine'…..

This Dr makes millions every year from his secret carbonated drink and doctors hate him

        • +6

We all know Dr Pepper is not a real doctor. But he is a real pepper

        • @4agte: Still a better doctor than Andrew Wakefield.

    • +4

Plot twist: It was just a ploy by the staffer to sell them because he gets commission

  • +6

I think you already bought enough

    • +5

If you think that's enough, trust me, you're wrong.

The path of Dr Pepper is a dark and treacherous one, that those who walk may never escape….

Seriously though, damn it! I bought some 1.5 litre bottles yesterday at full price.

    • +10

      amazing receipt

      looks like lunch is sorted

  • +9

Since when is Dr Pepper "Being banned in Australia"?

    • +11

One would presume that if it was banned, it would be withdrawn from sale rather than being reduced for quick sale.

      • +11

I think the government has recently found out that Dr Pepper never graduated, so isnt a real Doctor, hence why the quick skuttle to duck out of reach of the authorities. Anyone caught buying Dr Pepper will be charged with harbouring a fugitive, and be pepper sprayed.

    • +4

      2013 article.

      • +8

Probably the article the store person was reading.

    • So just stupid marketing and lack of publication of contents. I mean it contains cola, so as far as the caffiene goes, meets the requirements.

How other rubbish like sugary "formulated energy drinks" pass is beyond me then.

      • -4

Cola is not a source of caffeine - the caffeine is added to get you addicted (and clearly it works).

        • +1

The kola/cola nut is a natural caffiene source, hence the loophole.

Personally, like tea and coffee, I'd be happy with no caffiene, or just the caffiene naturally present. Adding more is as you say to get you addicted.

    • +1

Well Mountain Dew has been caffeinated in Australia since 2012. Something doesn't add up.

They sell both the US and UK dr peppers in cans at coles and woolworths and they were both still available at my local coles full price like a week ago , - maybe just the 1.5l ones but i cant find anything about it being banned online

    • this 1.5L is from poland.

  • +6

    I call BS.
    Nothing online about it.

  • +1

You pretty much bought all the stock of 1 store :P

  • That's rubbish.

  • +1

Hi OP, where did u get that its being banned?

    • +1

the guy stocking the shelves said it. Mentioned they had to clear it all apparently.

  • +7

If this is true I'm gonna jump off a cliff. Dr pepper is awesome

    • +1

better duck into the Reject shop and stock up

      • +2

Will hit it up like a gale force wind tomorrow.

      • Bought two only at my local. After reading this polish factory stuff I want to be sure. If all checks out will raid the rest bwahhaha

  • +3

Dr Pepper isn't classified as a cola (in 1963 the United States Fifth District Court in Dallas declared that Dr Pepper was not a cola) so under Australian law cannot be sold as a soft drink as it contains caffeine and only colas and energy drinks are allowed to contain caffeine it's just taken a while for the law in Australia to catch on

    • +10

      rip mountain dew

      • +6

"Blecch! Ew! Sheesh! I'll take a crab juice."

      • wish they'd go back to making a non-caffeinated version

      • AU version of Mountain Spew never contained caffeine, I thought.

        • +1

Has for around a year or two. Didn't used to. The USA version always has though.

    • +2

Yeah just marketing bullxxxx. It contains cola, but isn't marketed as one. The Aus law though should cover the contents, not whatever some court declared the marketing label was…

And if they just marketed them as energy drinks, they'd be ok too. What silliness.

    • ok dr pepper energy drink ……..

    • -5

There's nothing like this in the current regulations:

      https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2015L00467

Even this publication from 2000 doesn't state this - http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/publications/Pages/Safety-as…

"The Australian Food Standards Code restricts the addition of caffeine to kola-type soft drinks, flavoured cordials and flavoured syrups. In these drinks, the total caffeine content must not exceed 145 mg/kg (36mg/250ml serve) in the drink as consumed. The Code does not prescribe limits for naturally occurring caffeine in food - for example, tea, coffee and guarana. The caffeine levels in these foods will not normally exceed 100 mg in a standard serving."

In each of these, they only state the amount that can be added and the labeling requirements.

I think the OP got duped into buying all the parallel import stock.

      • +2

The deal is for $1 for a bottle of Dr Pepper, ignoring all the reasons why, do you think it's an appropriate neg vote?

        • Just to clarify on the neg vote, it was because the deal mentioned that it was being sold because it was banned and that there was no mention that this was the parallel import version of the product (the OP published a comment above that it's stock from Poland, but hasn't modified the deal).

In a sense I felt that this was arguably a major issue with the product because of this. It was essentially misleading and directing people towards the purchase for reasons other than the cheap price. In this case the OP bought 21 of them and mentioned in the comments they have no idea why it's being banned. Would they have bought all of those knowing there was no basis to the claim of banning Dr Pepper? And considering it's the parallel import with an apparently displeasing tasting formulation, they might end up actually being unhappy with their purchase, even though it's cheap.

I love a deal just like everyone on Ozbargain, but you also have to remain vigilant with your purchases. Sometimes people can be overwhelmed with emotion when buying things and regret it later, rather than being on the back foot and assessing before going ahead with the purchase. Heck I was tempted and also ready to rush down and grab some but decided to check first. Just because it's cheap, doesn't make it a good deal.

        • +1

          @bleckyL:

I read your comment twice to get a good sense at what you are saying, and yet I'm still left a little vague.

All I read is, you are negging this because it is a parallel import ( sorry if I missed another point because you comment isn't clear).

All I have to say is, parallel imports are not a reason to neg. Many products are parralel imports. If you worry about the taste, it's probably worth investing one dollar first to try, and if you don't like it that's cool, but if you do like it, you can buy 21 bottles like OP.

No big deal, no neg needed?

The 1.5 litre Dr P's are bottled in Poland and aren't very nice compared to the others. Totally different taste.

  • Someone please start a change.org campaign to make it legal…

  • +1

My Coles just restocked their little spot with Dr. Pepper.

I've never had it, mostly due to the price, and I guess the sugar. No middle ground with it, it seems. People always love it to death or hate it. Some day I might try it, some day.

      try double sars

      • Double sars?

        • +1

it's a drink. most people that enjoy dr pepper enjoy sars. you can find sars for around a dollar for a 1.25L in most supermarkets

        • Sasparilla. I think the Double Sars drink is either Tarix or Marchents brand.

        • @wingwang: sars is cat piss…

        • +2

@Slippery Fish: refer to the original comment I referred to and stfu

        • -7

          @wingwang: butt hurt much?

        • @Slippery Fish:

lol yep - love dr pepper - sars is cats piss

        • +1

@voter1: can you just say "you dont like it"? You're only implying you drank cat piss at one point in your life.

        • @Velathial: I've accidentally drunk sarsaparilla and I've smelt cat piss (possibly the other way around) and I'm pretty sure they they are the same thing.

How they train cats to pee into those bottles is beyond me.

I like diet DR Pepper and diet Dr Perrrer vanilla/cherry but hard to find except in specialty shops at a shocking price. I usually go on a diet Dr Pepper bender when I goto places like the U.K. 😄

      • Being a diabetic, its so hard to find diet Dr pepper, but when i do its usually 1 can and i savour every drop.

  • Cheaper than water, or fuel

  • +6

It might be 'banned' because the incorrect information is on the label. New stock may have been rectified, and the old stock selling cheap as it would be cheaper to sell it discounted then to rework it.

    • +1

I've been hearing it getting banned by various stores for well over 4 years.

      • +1

Coincidentally did the staff at those stores have plenty to sell you if you "act now"?

        • +1

Yep. Heard all kinds of excuses too. Not made in Australia, ingredients not approved for use, label incorrect etc.

  • Dr Pepper taste like Cherry Starburst Chews. If you like them you will like it.

  • heck, if these are imported soda, i would rather stock this up than locally produced soda…
having fatty liver is better than having diabeties…

  • +2

    It ain't no Jolt Cola

  • Well they have half the legal limit of caffeine at 116mg per litre. Legally the limit is at 320mg/L, according to food standards Australia. Maybe it's the excessive size. I think anything over 500ml is ridiculous.

    • +1

      Interesting.

Say if one was to accidentally get this liquid in their eye, would it be medicinal as per the Dr label?
Or would it be akin to getting Pepper sprayed?
I needs to know, for research.

  • +4

I love how 0p convinced ≈250+ people that dr pepper is about to be banned in Australia without any evidence whatsoever…
Getting people worried for its future?
    Associated?
    We will never know!
But if so I applaud your ingenuity….
    :)
    0p.

Watch 'that sugar film' and you wont even drink this for free.

    • +5

Bollocks. It'd take more than drastic health ramifications to stop me drinking Dr Pepper

    • +1

Meh. Everyone knows that fast food, smoking and alcohol are bad for you. You think any of them will stop?

  • +4

My completely unsupported and uneducated take on it is Dr Pepper isn't being banned from Australia, but the stuff that Reject Shop sells has been pulled as it's a parallel import. It's made in Poland and as someone pointed out above it tastes godawful compared to normal Dr Pepper (yeah yeah insert Dr Pepper tastes awful anyway here). I'm actually a Dr Pepper fan and only bought the Reject Shop stuff once, blergh.

The reason it's being pulled is probably a complaint from the official importer, or an issue with the labelling that doesn't meet Australian standards, or something like that. Reject Shop is the only place I know that sells the Polish stuff so I doubt you'll see it disappear from Woolies etc.

    • +1

I don't know if you're right but that would certainly make more sense.

    • +1

You're unsupported and uneducated take is pretty much that (not in terms of taste, that's ur opinion).
Offical importers have nothing on parallel imports, Infact it is parallel imports that keep local providers honest in terms of pricing and value.

If it was an issue, you think apple wouldnt have taken down kogan by now?

If there was a problem with labeling I'm sure it wouldn't be allowed to sell today, so that doesn't cut the pub test either. Additionally, labeling can be fixed by a simple sticker (see Asian snacks that has loads of Chinese but has a sticker to tell the ingredients etc).

    Buy syrup from USA.
    Buy Sodastream
Buy a external C02 rig for it.

    Profit.

    • +1

the syrup comes nowhere close to the taste of the can. I've never had from the bottle though so YMMV

  • +2

They can't ban the black nectar.

If you live in WA, Spudshed sell blocks of 12cans for $14.00, Sale price for $7.50

    • Oh wow this is great! Any particular Spudshed?

      • One at Wanneroo had them last week. I assume it would in all stores.

  • Where where where? Haven't seen it at Morley one but haven't hit up Innaloo for a while

  • Nectar of the gods!

I didn't even know the Reject Shop sells Dr Pepper let alone bottles of the black gold.
