Need a Car for 5 Days: Best Idea?

Hi everyone,

This may sound strange, but I've never needed to hire a car before.

I need a car for 5 days.

What are my best options?

Thank you for any help!

  • Where? Is there car share like GoGet where you're going?

    • GoGet for 5 days would be pretty exy

It depends on whether he needs 5 days solid including nights or just some hours during those 5 days. OP seems to think we can look over the shoulder and know plans from a few sentences.

        • He asked about a hire car all the info you need right there.

Talk to the apex gang. They will sort out a car for you to drive around in for a few days

You have posted a lot of crap recently the pensioner. I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not trolling (even though I suspect you are). You have provided very little information so I will give the obvious answer - go online and book a hire car.

    • Going by the question history OP's just a tyro senior in the modern world so I'd cut some slack. Trouble is OP's indecision so maybe OP'll ask the same question again later.

    • A "troll" to be sure.
Nobody, but nobody would post the volume of vague "apologetic" requests for information as this person.

        • I agree. Those two are also heavy crap posters. Google can easily solve all the issues these people have.

        • @pantsparty: The only explanation I can think of is that they feel they can trust these forums more than they trust their Google searching abilities?

Some posts are just completely left field though…I can't explain them.

        • @John Kimble: they feel they can trust these forums more than they trust their Google searching abilitiesthemselves

Fixed that for you. OP behaviour is symptomatic of wanting to be told what to do, yet not being able to commit to a course of action, even if when there is little risk. Result: life going down the drain.

  • Thanks!

I've never needed to hire a car before so I'm not even aware of which companies are considered the best value?

    • Depends where you are located. Nobirds have been really good value for me.

    • Carhood

  • Most of the well known hire companies are about $30 a day (give or take) if you hire for a week or more. Some have discounts through entertainment book or other places.

    Google is your best friend.

Don't let this happen to you (or get domestic travel insurance).

Just make sure you hire one that's $80k to give you the highest yield

      What do you mean???

      • +1

just a running joke on Ozbargain about a guy who posted here claiming an $80k car is a high-yielding investment :) here's the source https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273269#comment-4128667

To your actual question though I recommend comparing Hertz, Avis, Europcar etc for your best rate. I do not recommend GoGet or Flexicar because they are targeted to 18-25 year olds and are therefore more expensive to hire (high insurance cover built in).

          Thanks!

Well, I'm definitely not 18-25 years old!

If you're in Sydney, I recommend Orana Car hire in Artarmon or Tempe

If you buy a high-yielding investment, you could probably sell it for a profit.

  • try hertz, you can even transport $300 in the glove box ;)

I can't offer any help with finding a reputable hire car.
But I strongly suggest taking a photo or video of the vehicle before and after hiring to avoid any disputes about any damage to the vehicle.

  • Thanks!

    I'm in Victoria.

  • Are there any hidden fees?

I mean of course other than paying for fuel are there any other fees I need to pay for?

    EDIT:

I just checked Hertz and there are a couple extra fees that really increase the price…

For example, a car is quoted at costing at $29 per day but then the location fee is an additional $42 and there's a vehicle registration fee that's an additional $26, then taxes and "admin recovery".

So the price is $150 for 5 days rental, but then the extra fees increase the price by an extra $100 or so.

I don't see this when I have booked with hertz, I just tried it again now. On the car selection page it quoted me $174.78, Suzuki Swift for 5 days from Hertz Clayton. Unless different hertz locations charge different fees?

As I got to the final booking page, the price was still $174.78 and it says those fees are already included in the price:

      INCLUDED
      Vehicle registration recovery
      Admin Recovery
      Unlimited Kilometers Included
      NOT INCLUDED
      Accident Excess Reduction
      Maximum Cover
      Premium Emergency Roadside Service
      Fuel
      Additional Driver Fee

Perhaps try it again? I've never been hit with surprise fees with hertz.

      • Fees vary between locations, with location fees normally highest in Airport and CBD locations. Check you are on hertz.com.au not hertz.com the AU site will give you the final price up front, if you include a Saturday night you can normally get one day free at corporate locations, use PC# 107424 Be careful if using any codes from the entertainment book as they sometimes increase the price.

  • Is 'Car Next Door' available near where you are going? It is similar to 'Go Get', and is AUS based. Search online and their website should show up

  • Try East Coast car rentals. Around $27 day for a small auto, unlimited kms. DON'T buy the extra daily insurance, get normal travel insurance which includes $5,000 excess for the prang you may have.
