AlibabaCloud SSD Cloud Server USD $33 (~AUD $42.50) for 1 Year (1GB RAM, 40GB SSD, 1TB Data, Sydney POP)

160

Received this email on Alibaba's cloud offering, which has their new Sydney POP opened recently. For USD $33 (including GST, ~AUD $42.50) you'll get the following "SSD Cloud Server" for 12 months:

  • 1 CPU core
  • 1GB DDR4 Memory
  • 40GB SSD Cloud Disk
  • 1TB Data Transfer

Service gets activated pretty much straight away, and you get an IPv4 address on AS45102. Note that AlibabaCloud is gearing up to be a full blown cloud service comparable to AWS and Google Cloud with virtual servers, object storage, database, etc on offering (although I don't think all the services are available in their Sydney POP) thus cannot compared with your average low end box. The interface is a bit harder to get used to (comparing to AWS and Google Cloud, haven't used Azure).

  • I also found it hard to use the interface. I found these instructions to be useful: http://www.businesslegions.com/blog/2017/06/26/hosting-alicl…

    • Ha. I still haven't worked out how to reimage the disk to Debian. Now got stuck with Ubuntu 16.04…

      • hahaha… don't even know where to begin. I can see in the Instance details the image name, but no option to change.

  • Do you know if the 1TB is per month or for the whole year?

    • It's for the month. In my order details page I have 12 quantity of the following:

      Traffic Package Size: 1TB
      Expiry Date: 1Month
      Plan: Overseas

I get monthly reminders that my data plan is going to expire but it's already paid for 12 months. Hope that helps.

      • Thanks for that, I am assuming you have signed up for this. Do you mind sharing some performance stats for your box? Things like network speed tests and disk I/O, maybe? :)

Hope this helps. The websites hosted don't get a lot of traffic as we noticed there is not enough memory (1GB) - need to remember to create Swapspace as per those instructions above:

          Retrieving speedtest.net configuration…
          Testing from Alibaba (47.xx.xx.xx.xx)…
          Retrieving speedtest.net server list…
Selecting best server based on ping…

  • Last time I saw it at the same price. Is it good to use as web server?

    • What are your web server needs?

      • Wordpress and phpbb etc

        • Should be fine, but will depend on your site traffic.

  • can this be used as a seedbox?

    • There are cheaper options I believe…

This works out at about $3.50 per month which seems pretty good.

        • Only for the first year, when extend they jump a lot.

        • So quit after the first year?

        • @dread22: from $4.xx to $13.xx so no deal for me.

      • What?
Ive got a great (200gig storage, 256meg, 900gig transfer) cheap vps that costs just under 5 a month but they never come available any more and people keep asking me for the same as what I have.

        • For 200GB storage for $5/month it's not bad. Check storage tag on LowEndBox for cheap storage VPS offers. However if just for seedbox I would think an offer specific for seedbox would be better & cheaper.

  • Aren't cloud servers only close to comparable to an onsite server if you have 100mbps NBN?

    • They're not comparable at all?

      • close to not comparable

        • not close to comparable

    Do not use Aliba cloud.
They have an agent running on your server and can run any command.
In Oct 2015, the administrator of alibaba cloud run a command and delete all the clients data…

Lesson: Always have redundancy for your data, don't expect the cloud to be 100% secured and guaranteed.

    • Cloud provider does not need to have an agent on your server to delete clients data. You can dig up a story on AWS / Azure / GC/ Rackspace / DO lost client data.

What is the standard price for this?

I can't register my account due to network issues. Keep getting "Network busy, please try again later".

Not off to a good start.

      NBN?

      • +1

        Nah. Work PC.

        Worked on my phone though.

  • Damn .. their interface sucks!
They created my VM in US - I requested it to be in Sydney.
    Now testing their tech support.

    • Yep - Their support is incompetent. They cannot destroy and recreate my VM on different zone.

    • This is strange, I created a VM in Sydney, but when I did an IP trace on the IP address, it says that the IP is located in California. But when I ping the IP address, the ping time is around 45ms, which suggests the server is located somewhere nearer. Ping time to the US for me is around 200ms.

      • My ping was around 150ms. Traceroute hops via Sydney then US

        • I put in a ticket for an explanation, this is what they said:

IP lookup using an online web tool like ip-tracker.org lookups up the information of IP block registration. This IP belongs to a block that is >registered in US California. But the IP is implemented in Sydney Australia.

This does not affect any configuration or performance of Alicloud services.

To summarize it, this registration information cannot be changed.

  • Anyone on here care to explain what the hell server hosting is? I keep seeing it more and more but have no idea, and feel one of y'all guys would give a "preferred" explanation over what Google would show me.

    Cheers!
