Help - Paint Scratched in Rental Property

OK so I like nice hot steamy showers, so water accumulates on the walls.
So basically what happened is my hair dryer banged against the wall and now there's a 1.5x1.5cm top coat of paint removed :(.

Yes I know the damage is caused by me, so I'll be paying for the repairs, which is perfectly fine by me.
Now obviously being a frugal Ozbargainer I'm looking for the cheapest way possible, I need to get the exact shade of paint, is there a paint number or type of paint that Housing SA uses?

I'd say this could fall under wear and tear? I've seen worse that has passed.

    What is the wall material?

Wow, thanks for the story fast reply :)

      Smooth concert wall.

Take a photo of the colour and go to bunnings and get a sample pot (or head to sca and see if there is a similar paint colour).

      Thanks for the quick reply.
I tried that, my phones camera isn't very good, but I took a piece of the scratched paint to Bunnings, found the closest shad on a card but the paint ended up being lighter and more whiter :(

Let the Bunnings paint person do it for you - they're usually pretty good at matching colours from a paint chip

if you can chip a piece off in a spot you can't see bunnings can scan it (I don't know the technical term) and they can match it. Maybe ring and ask to see how big of a piece they need.

You will never match the colour exactly unless it was freshly painted in the last few weeks. The existing wall colour will have faded, become dirty over time so if you try and re paint a small patch it will always look different. You should contact Housing and see if they accept it as general wear otherwise you will need to paint the entire wall if you want consistent colour.

+1 to colour-match at Bunnings or a paint store. Might also point out that wet areas generally require a special type of paint.

Best bet if you don't want it to be noticeable is to paint the whole wall rather than just the patch.

Just a thought but there are apps that designers use to snap a picture and search for the closest CMYK or Pantone colour.
Well it turns out there are equivalent ones for interior design. Not sure if this or something similar from other brands would work?

Before running out to Bunnings, chat with the owner/agent - they might have a pot of the paint or not care. A small chip I would argue is wear and tear, you would be likely to make that sort of damage simply moving.

Yeah, I once spoke to our building manager and he had spare pots of paint. Worked a treat!

Just get some acrylic paint and keep mixing different colours until you match it. Don't waste money on a tin of paint if you don't have to. Done this a few times - no complaints.

Chip a bit more off - go to bunnings with this and buy that colour in a sample for $3 - they cannot work off photos. Also purchse some selleys spack filler $7 and fine sandpaper for like $1. First fill the chip with selleys, then sand it back when dry and then paint on the paint and voila… otherwise i wouldnt worry about it. 1.5cm by 1.5cm is Nothing - you can even skip the selleys but if you chip 3 coats of paint it will show

  • I'd just like to thank everyone for all your helpful comments.

I'll be taking a chip of paint to Bunnings, if that doesn't go well I'll do what Super Kami Dende says.

Once again thanks everyone, and happy Ozbargaining :)

  • Well I got Bunnings to do a match from a chip of paint.
They scanned it, made the paint and it's a 99% match!

Thanks to everyone for your help, happy Ozbargainin :)
