Backup Harddrive Hardware - Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am currently using a toshiba 1tb canvio external hdd for my offsite backup.

The size is plenty as it's for 1 desktop used for a home business.

I also have a back up on an additional hard drive located internally in the desktop and also an external which stays onsite.

I am considering doing a weekly swap by acquiring another toshiba 1tb for the off site back up.

I am also considering doing a cloud back up.

Currently using paragon and windows backup ( 2 backups each time).

Summary:
1 x internal back up (separate physical drive)
1 x external hdd onsite back up
1 x external hdd offsite backup
Potentially adding anorher weekly swap of the above external offsite

What are your thoughts and recommendations on the above ?

    Yep that's a perfect backup.

Network administration and IT workers follow the basic 3-2-1 rule.

3 copies, on 2 forms of media (internal drive, USB flash drive etc) with 1 offsite.

rclone to onedrive/dropbox etc would work well.

I use rclone to OneDrive (200gb free from Telstra) to backup my documents, keychain, 1password etc (all encrypted). Automated backup twice per-day.

I also have a portable USB backing up and a NAS copy (with some files syncing daily and others weekly).

I am currently investigating Backblaze B2 storage. Cheap to store, relatively expensive to pull files down. But… the way I see it is if I need to do that the cost may not be an issue as it would mean my computer and two local backups have failed/gone missing etc.

  • It would depend on how much data (size) you would need to back up and also the security you need.
Cloud is good and cheap but not recommended for sensitive information.

    • I'm a bit hesitant going on the cloud as the info is sensitive. I would look into it directly with the software provider who would have the right barriers setup through Microsoft at an enterprise level.

      • I would recommend a NAS system. Eg QNap or Synology. They provide redundancy and support most automatic back up software's.

  • Good backup plan. Congratulation.

    • Small world Nora, im actually good friends with your cousin Michael.
