Ethernet over Power Recommendations

I asked this on Whirlpool but it seems like there are some networking geeks on Ozbargain so why not ask here? :D

I'm not very well versed with networking so I apologise if I sound like an idiot.

My parents have been streaming using an Android box. As they do not have a data point in the lounge we have been using a Wifi extender with ethernet connected to the box, it has been working fine but it seems the stream quality has increased recently. This has caused the connection to constantly drop out.

So before I get an electrician to install a new data point, I want to try an EoP to see if that alleviates the problem. Ideally I would like to purchase one from Officeworks due to their hassle free returns policy (+ price match hehe) if it does not solve the issue.

Happy to spend up to $200 – a little bit more doesn't hurt I guess.

  • I own the RE350 TP Link Extender
    Does 5ghz and 2.4ghz

You will find streaming over 2.4 is congested and no good
5ghz is much better, shorter range but the RE350 does true AC1200 speed and I am using it at the moment for "rebroadcasting" my Wireless through to the second story
Been flawless for 2 Xbox One S units, A PS4 and also a TV all connected to it via its gigabit ethernet port
Probably the best value too for 100 bucks or so

You will need its own powerpoint as it doesnt do passthrough but it will work 100% for what you need
I stream 4k over it and its flawless

but it will work 100% for what you need

That's just dumb. Wireless performance is highly variable.

  • TP link is the best brand for this.

Officeworks has them I'm pretty sure.

Before you go off and buy them how about checking their upload /download speed with your laptop plugged directly into the modem?

Maybe they need to go on a newer faster internet plan while you're at it.

  • There are 2 conversations here.

    1. Link extender or wifi repeater - grabs an existing wifi signal and resends it. The TP Link RE350 is a link extender - 2.4GHz:Up to 300Mpbs, 5GHz:Up to 867Mbps

    2. Ethernet over power adapters. There are 2 types: with and without pass through. The pass through ones have a power point on the front. These adapters rely on having a "good" electrical circuit and a circuit that doesn't have too much noise (old wiring is usually the cause of this). Choose from Dlink, TP Link, Edimax and Netgear brands. If you want to install multiple receivers make sure you read the specifications.

D-Link DHP-701AV PowerLine AV2 2000 Gigabit Network Kit (one transmitter and one receiver) $139 Umart allows up to 16 adapters. PowerLine AV2 2000 technology for up to 2000 Mbps throughput

TP-LINK TL-PA211 KIT 200Mbps Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit, Mini Size, HomePlug AV, Twin Pack $49. (Note speed is only 200Mbps - so probably not suitable for your application).

TP-Link TL-WPA8630P KIT AV1200 Wi-Fi Passthrough Range Extender Powerline $249. 3 ethernet ports and wifi. It is actually a wifi repeater AND ethernet over power adapter in one. AC1200 Dual band Wi-Fi with combined speeds of up to 1200Mbps and HomePlug AV2 providing ultra-fast powerline transfer speeds of up to 1200Mbps

Depending on the age of your house, Officeworks is a good idea in case you dont get the plugs to work. Dont forget Officeworks do price match other stores.

I am running an "old" Netgear XAV5101 with one adjacent to the router and one each in two other rooms.

  • Do you/they have Foxtel? Do Foxtel still give out the free ones??

  • Thanks all - I ended up with the TP Link AV2000 from Officeworks and it works perfectly.
