First Car - Budget $9000

Hi Guys,

So I'm a real estate agent and i need a car that i can drive around all the suburbs and Projects construction sites and this is my first time i buy a car also.

Budget: $7000-$9000 (can be around that range but not too much)
Body: Sedan only

Requirements:

  1. Reverse Camera, I suck at parking, really, no joke, so I want a car that have a built-in reverse camera (I know i can buy one but if so I'll need to put a screen into the car as well so why not buy one with a built-in?) or at least a reserve sensor

  2. Cheap to maintain

  3. Fuel efficiency

  4. Look Modern, just personal preferences

Looking for year model 2010 or 2011 onward

I made a list of what type of car I think is okay as a first car, please tell me your personal experience with those brands and suggest me if I missed anything

  1. Holden Commodore
  2. Holden Cruze
  3. Honda Accord/Euro
  4. Honda Civic
  5. Mazda 3
  6. Toyota Camry
  7. Toyota Corolla

Please tell me what your thoughts and vote

Thank guys,

    it's mad as!

Get the newest low mileage option

Honestly for your budget you're better off chasing a Hyundai Elantra. Decent size, and shouldn't be too old within your budget.

Otherwise I think you should update your post with what year models they are. All well and good for someone to recommend a Commodore, but a $9k Commodore is gonna be pretty old!

    • well for year model just newest as possible mate, if the budget only can get a 5-7 years old car then i have no choice then haha

      • +2

Yes but no point asking for recommendations on a car model, without knowing the year.

Sure a 2017 Commodore VF is an amazing car, but for your budget, the newest Commodore in the country is a 2013 VE Omega with 244,000kms on the clock

So your poll results aren't gonna help you very much because of your vague examples.

        • -1

well then i'll take the 2012 with 150k on the clock haha

just edited, looking from 2010-2012 onward mate, older than that might be too old i think

    • Also, is the Elantra good? What is your opinion about it?

      • +1

        It's good enough.

        • Get a 2008 Subaru Liberty spec.B ; )

very rare you can get a Mazda 3 fit all your criteria.

    • Well i found some Madaz 3 around 2011-2012 that can be fit into, but they don;t have the reserve camera :(

Is a reverse camera really a deal-breaker? In my opinion, a reverse sensor should more than suffice.

        • +4

Or skip the camera/sensors and take the time to learn how to drive and park the car the old fashioned way? Skills like spatial awareness are priceless.

        • @blue-dinosaur:

Most of us know how to park a car but why not embrace technology and make your life easier if you can? I have been driving for >15 years and got a new car in December with a camera on it. Never though I needed it but i admit it is a great addition and highly recommended.

      • But said reverse cam is a must that why i said you wont be able to found it

  • You will not find a 2010+ Accord Euro with a reverse camera standard for under $10,000

A real estate agent with -

    Elantra
    Mazda3
    Corolla
    Cruze

While that maybe great for a small family. I'd shudder to get in one of those if I was buying real estate.

As for reversing camera you might need to have this added to any car you buy in the price range you are looking at.

Again as an Estate agent, a bigger car more will appointed, even if its a little older, would be a better look and more comfortable for clients

    • Thanks for the opinion, which car you think i should get then? I have no clues or anything about cars

Given your car expertise, just go with a Camry and add the reversing camera.

Yes its rather bland, but its larger and its generally a reliable car.

But keep in mind the younger the age, the higher the km's and personally I would try to keep below the 100Km on the purchase.

You dont say where you are

Here is a search on car sales that comes in around the price

        NSW

        • Thanks mate, will check out the Camry

          I'm in Sydney btw

This is what fits in your technical price bracket only 2 from your list make it based on price alone

Going 3 years back under 50 K's on Clock

Besides the Elantra mentioned above going as far back in age to 2010 drives your K's up and only a handful of quite high milage cars.

You need to go older and higher K's to get some of the others you mention. Unless you have a trade in or good at negotiating.

    Fiat 500
    Fiat Punto
Fiat Panda -James May's car of choice

    Ford Fiesta
    Ford Focus

    Holden Barina
    Holden Spark
    Holden Cruze

    Honda City Reversing Camera
    Honda Jazz

    Hyundai i20

    Kia Rio

    Mazda 2

    Mitsubishi mirage

    Nissan Micra
    Nissan Pulsar Reversing Camera

    Renault Clio

    Suzuki Alto
    Suzuki Celerio
    Suzuki Swift

    Toyota Yaris Reversing Camera

    Volkswagen UP
    Volkswagen Polo

Other options older i'd rather have in the fun section

    2002 Subaru WRX STI
2005 Mini cooper S This is the one i'd probably go for personally, 2 doors but surprisingly big loads of fun to drive and dare i say it less likely to be trashed than any of the 5 here

    2007 Ford Focus XR5 turbo

And if you want a decent larger car

2006 Ford Falcon BF Mk II XR6 Turbo
    2006 Holden Commodore VZ SS.

    • Thx so much for the list man, will check them all out

      • No worries If your buying the car and using it for business can't you claim K's from Employer or use a log book to record Every Working Day and use it as a fairly hefty deduction at the end of financial year??

If so it could change your Allowance not that i want to get you into more debt just might give you more choices as to what you were aiming for.

so it could be worth looking into what you can offset in tax or extra income depending how your set up with employer.

Worth asking if you haven't already

    Suzuki Swift

i can't believe i'm saying this, but if you can't get a camry or corolla then the next on the list should be a newish swift. these look fun to drive.

  • If you suck at parking, make sure you budget some money for insurance. Also, from your other thread, aren't you in breach of your visa work conditions?
