[Poll] What's your MOST favourite music streaming provider?

Pandora Music is shutting down…for the AUS/NZ region…

I admit that Pandora Music is one of my favourite music streaming provider - I think their algorithm is a bit better than Spotify. It works great with my Sonos.

Now the question remains: what's your favourite streaming provider?

    I like tunein

    GUVERA!

Just kidding. I buy and play vinyl and 2nd hand CD's. I even talk about them on YT, where I listen to other stuff as well.

    • +1

      Also prefer my own purchases.
Convert CDs to FLAC and play them thru' AVR,PC and portable gear.
Trialed Spotify, which introduced me to some new artists however there was much I didn't cotton on too.

  • I tried Iheartradio recently since it has unlimited data streaming with the Optus plan I use. It's terrible. I use Spotify the most, and I will miss Pandora. Oh, I also use Youtube and "exposed" on my android phone to turn the screen off while playing.

    • Does the "exposed" functionality prevent you from wasting bandwidth on the video portion?

      • Unfortunately not. But there is another module that will stop video ads.

i used to Spotify, but Google Music came with Youtube Red and a more music from artists i listen to.

  • I have tried Spotify, Deezer, Google play, Microsoft Groove and Apple Music.

Spotify is definitely the best because of apps that work really well, including desktop and web player which I use the most. Also the variety of playlists are great. Only complaint is unexplained failures in Android Auto: "Spotify doesn't seem to be working at the moment".

Deezer and Google Play also had good applications, no complaints.

Microsoft Groove and Apple Music (on Android at least) were garbage. Both apps would randomly fail play songs until you repeatedly hit play then they work. When you tap search field on Apple Music, the keyboard does not pop up until you tap it a second time. Pretty user unfriendly app to me.

Damn, that's sad. Enjoying my (free) Pandora station on the PC as I type……….must admit considered rejigged screen recently was a backward step with all the useful bios etc shuffled to off screen areas.

So what free (PC) alternative with minimal ads where you can set up a "your preferences" station?

  • +2

Whichever is free or cheapest.. this is Ozbargain after all.

  • Spotify to work with SONOS

    • +1

True, there are a lot of streaming services working on SONOS, including Apple music, Spotify, Tunein etc..

I still believe some of the channels on Pandora are better than Spotify (I love their easy listening channel) but I will pick Spotify if I have to pick one.

  • I jump between the free trials. Currently google play.

    • How long will that last?

  • +1

why do they need a local office for streaming services? Why does it need to stop streaming in Aus?

    Where's the radio option?

  • I find Google very good - the interface, to me, seems more intuitive than Spotify. Huge catalogue. It's also browser based on PC's (not sure if Spotify has a browser based site yet), and you get a YouTube Red subscription (no ads on mobile or PC, can play YouTube with phone locked etc).

    • Yep Spotify has a browser based player as well as a windows application

  • I use Google Play and it's very good, I currently subscribe for $11.99/month
But recently I've started using Spotify, on the free trial.
Spotify has the advantage of Shazam integration. So I can Shazam a song and then use Spotify integration on Sonos to play the track.
On that basis alone I would rate Spotify over Google Play. I would cancel my Google play subscription but I'm not sure what happens to all my playlists?

    • If you Shazam a song, does it appear in Spotify automatically for you? Or do you add it to a Spotify playlist yourself from within Shazam?

I ask because it used to be automatic for me, and now no longer happens.

      • Yeah, it used to be automatic for me too but I don't know what happens now? It doesn't seem to be automatic and it makes it less of a plus over Google Play. It's frustrating as these music services seem to chop and change as they feel. Auto Shazam playlist would be a super plus and it looked like they almost achieved this!
For a short while there I could Shazam a song and then just play it at home on my Sonos system without any extra effort. Why would they remove this, it was brilliant.

        • I just tried it again and it works with an extra click on Shazam if you select "add to Spotify playlist". Not "automatic" but not too bad.

        • Yeah, that's what I thought. I recently changed phones and noticed it didn't happen, and blamed that, but I realise now that I have more songs on my old phone than in the My Shazam list in Spotify, so it must have stopped before the switch over.

The difference for me is I don't get the option to add to a Spotify playlist :-( at least, not with the existing songs in My Shazam.

    PANDORA ALL THE WAY !

Makes me sad that they're going.

The simplicity of it is unbeatable. Well for me at least.

Just open the app- and that's it. No searching, no decision making, no fuss.

Their algorithm is the best of the lot IMO.

Their closing down in Australia- not worldwide? What does that mean?

They're closing down in Australia- not worldwide? What does that mean?

It means you'll have to move into the 21st century and get a VPN to continue listening to Pandora. I do like their algorithm also, found many a new artist thanks to them.

      • No guarantee they will maintain local content licensing. So the offering may change substantially.

      • I think it's the time to setup a VPN tunnel on my pfSense router and put my sonos under that….

setup a VPN tunnel on my pfSense router and put my sonos under

I put a needle into a spinny piece of black plastic and sound comes out. I'm not sure what you just said…

      Yep, Pandora is fantastic

    • Interesting, pandora still wins by far in the USA.

  • a portable music player and a 16k song collection, no big deal

no fees, no data usage, no quality deterioration.

  • Apple Music fan here. There app is horrendous for finding new songs but I do enjoy their 'My New Music' and 'My Favourites' playist they create for me. Does the job!
Pandora seems interesting, Never heard of it. Guess i never will either.

  • +3

This is surprising, all the old people i know also use Pandora. It is simple to use, fully functional on my Windows phone and Xbox and has helped me discover a lot of music.

  • where's the bikies option?

  • Only ever used one of them, the popular one.

  • Dylanradio.com. I listen to the Mt Everest of modern music all day. Those who don't 'get' Bob, I'm sorry I can't help you. Just like I can't help those who don't get Picasso, Van Gogh and a myriad of others. Go on, tune in and listen, and open yourself to conversion. And remember to chip in a few dollars every so often to keep the station (in cold Nova Scotia) on the radio waves and spreading the Word.

  • I <3 trance, so it has to be ah.fm for me

    • +1

Thanks for the link. I usually listen to RAW.fm. Will check this out.

  • How is SoundCloud not on this list?

Can use it on your mobile / desktop for absolutely free.

I admit it's mostly remixes and its hard to find radio edits of popular mainstream songs without paying but still.

  • So many adds in Spotify you never got in Pandora.
All the playlists I set up I can't transfer.
Pandora was so simple and easy to use.

    • +1

True. So true. So sad that's going but business is business and they can't dodge taxes here anymore.

Need a free streaming, too many damn ads in Spotify and I hate their algorithm.
