red alert was a good game.

    • +3

Shame the franchise is dead now

      • +2

i feel like real time strategy has died (in the sense there has been any major new hits)

        • +2

I actually play company of heroes one still should boot up some aoe2 at least the classics get re-released on digital platforms as we have lost or thrown out our discs.

Yes rts has been dieing for awhile its pretty much shooters or rpgs

        • @DaTa: If you like CoH try Men of War Assult Squad 2 when it is next on special form Steam. Like CoH only better

Generals Zero Hour was by far one of my favourite online multiplayers.

I know someone made a third party online for it, does anyone use that? Are there many players?

I tried to get it working ages ago but had no luck and gave up.

    • +3

Played it against my mates last weekend.. Cracking game

    • +1

Anymore info on that online mod?

      • +1

To play online, go to CNC-Online - https://cnc-online.net/en/

We recently got it going and works great without needing to install hamachi.

        • +1

Oh my god, thank you. Zero Hour is one of the best strategy games I have ever played and the only reason I stopped playing is because bots became too predictable.

      • This is it: https://cnc-online.net/en/

I might try and get it working again, I'll report back.

    • same experience here. devastating.

      • +1

I got it working pretty easy this time using gentool rather than the actual C&C online app.

Had a game and got destroyed in minutes, good times.

I worked for Westwood Studios before EA bought it; way to kill off a company.

    • I lovedddddddddd C&C I think my first one was on N64 :D

    • +1

What did you do at Westwood Studios? C&C, Tiberian Sun and Red Alert were badass

      • Eye of the beholder series was Westwood yeah?

      • There used to be a program called Westwood Chat which the game servers ran off. Organised gaming sessions, monitored online activity etc., gave away free things. At that stage it was C&C and Monopoly mainly.

        • I remember Westwood Chat. One of my first ventures in to online gaming. I used to play Red Alert on "Case's Ladder."

        • @Skramit: Definitely oldschool!

    • EA kills westwood bless you heart for bring us great games till whos pricks took over

  • +2

Probably best to include in the description - download and activate on the Origin platform

    • +1

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. No deal!

Steam or GOG for me. But each to their own.

      • Yea its either Origin, Steam or Uplay for me.

  • +1

is there anyway to play these in LAN?

    • Yeah most of them support Lan play and the rest support Wan play which is like Lan except bigger

After that generation of games I was a big fan of Starsiege: Tribes. Got the whole game free on a CD on a magazine lol

It destroyed my year 12 lol

One of those games you could play on 200+ ping

      • +1

I started and finished Warcraft III during my year 12 exam weeks.
Should have probably done a bit more study instead.

      • +1

@Spackbace: Your year 12? OMG,it really got in the way of my early 40's :-).

I do miss it though, but my wife was happy when Optus Tribes Insonmniax mod went offline. (And with your gameplay speed in insomniax I always assumed you had something better than a dialup 56k account with iinet :-) ).

        • +1

Omg I recognise that username! You played at the same time I did, used to play heavy yeah?

And looks like you recognised me lol yep was in year 11/12. I still remember my dad playing on September 11 2001

And I don't think we got adsl till after Tribes wasn't played any more

        • @Spackbace: I always picked heavy :-). My ping was crap, and my old man reactions meant that I would be dead before I had turned around after leaving the inventory after spawing if I had anything less than heavy :-) . But at least with insomniax you could pick up a booster jet pack in heavy to move a little faster. That Col Blair really annoyed me with that amazing speed and near zero ping, and even though he would be sniper/ no armour, you could not hurt him even with a mortar round (With my low ping he had probably already gone when I thought I was hitting him with a mortar anyway :-) ), he would just join a team to base r@pe the other teams base, then leave again (Maybe they worked at Optus near the server)

        • @Op54:

That name doesn't ring a bell, off hand I only remember DamageInc lol

Waa fun times :) yeah that mod was different, could at least kill someone in 1 shot with the sniper rifle unlike the stupid laser!

        • +2

          @Op54:

Hello fellow Optus Tribes Insomniax player - it is I, your nemesis Colonel Blair :D

Damn I miss those days. I was just chatting on the bittah discord about Tribes Insomniax.

We're all gearing up to play Midair which is a bit of a 'spiritual successor' to tribes (more like they couldn't buy the license so made a tribes games and called it something else). You should check it out!

Come find all the old tribers at www.bittah.com

PS I didn't work at Optus but I did have Optus cable. It certainly helped!

        • By the way - I almost never played as a sniper, was 95% of the time in heavy with the rocket booster!

        • +1

          @Spackbace:
          Hey,
I was playing tribes when the september 11 news came through. Was on the Insomniax server, bloodbath map (i am thinking it may have had a 2 after it?). Clearly remember people saying a plane had crashed into the trade centre, i thought they meant the one in Melbourne.

        • +1

          @Duff5000:

Yeah dad was playing (unsure what level) and was like wtf is everyone talking about just play ffs!

And then it was all over our news. I still remember Rove Live getting interrupted when it happened.

        • @Spackbace: What was your dads name in game?

        • +1

          @Duff5000:

No idea lol and I doubt he would remember!

        • @colblair: Shows that my memory is for shit then, damn old age :-). Heavy? Did you move like a sniper when in heavy? I just recall your base raping antics, amazing to watch the speed, but hard to believe at the same time, even with a booster pack I would feel like I would weigh ten ton, and I was using old out of date diesel fuel in my booster instead of Nitro).
Optus cable? I guess that would help too of course. As I said, my ping was so crap (iinet dial up), when I would drop a mortar where I thought you were, I guess that you were already out of the base then, figures :-).
I must admit, your antics were the only cause of frustration for me, as I was an older player (In my 40's way back then), I had some fun with younger characters when I would tease them, and then they would come for you with a vengeance without being careful (Worked a lot of the time), and then they would hit my mines nearly every time (Easy hits, working on their hating being taunted, then they would come back after me even faster. Oh those heady days).
As for online gaming, nah, my wife was not happy back then, I would stay on that game until the wee hours, hooked on it, and then I would still have to get up for work at 4am and I was shagged. Not good really. Us oldies :-) need our nanna naps you know. I stick with playing againts a computer now, I can save where I am and come back later :-).
Good to hear from you CB, even if I daydreamed about you getting run over by a truck way back when :-)
Gigabean? Is that your site/ company?

        • @Spackbace: Yes I recall that too, we were watching Rove live at that time and Rove was about to have the young actor from 6th sense on from memory, then the Rove show closed for the breaking news. Funny that something happens and your mind locks in that memory for life.

        • @colblair: Further to my last message, when I was playing on the Tribes Optus server, another three or four guys from my work were also playing regularly (We started out linking a couple of computers at work together and having a LAN game before we went online later on after learning how to play, and two of the guys would just go online to stuff it up for everyone else, you know the type. They would get their kicks out of stripping out the defenses from their own team bases. Then they would get kicked, and come back and start all over, I recall that one of them had learned how to grab the flag, take it to the opposition and throw it to one of their players (Even the guys on the other team would vote to have them kicked).
We would be at work together the day after and it is funny now to recall the arguments at work over their juvenile antics. I do not think I could take a simple game that serious again :-)

        • @Op54:
haha I'm sure I annoyed a lot of people back then. I would've been like 18 or something back then… much more time for gaming then than now!
I would often destroy one teams base, get a bunch of flag caps and then swap over to the other team to try and win it from there. Part of it was because complete destruction of a team was no fun, and I wasn't really trying to troll anyone… also because a comeback win is fun :)

I miss the old rocket booster pack, mag gun, flak cannon, vengeance pack… that dropzone map where you'd fall 1000000m to your death… good times.

Gigabean is a company that myself & Duff5000 (who has replied below & was also an insomniax regular) founded a while back which we've been running for a while but are slowly winding up as we both have other jobs & multiple kids now.

        • @colblair: I have just been on the developer site looking at the screens and play info for the new Midair game. As you say, that is Tribes 1 redux maybe with added steroids :-).
I would hope that there will be a version for training on your own computer first :-) (Like we had with the freebie T1), would not want to embarrass myself learning to play while getting shot in the head every 2 seconds.
Looking at thew road-map, they have not reached the funding required yet to make a fully working version 1 yet, am I reading that right?. Says it will be free to play, but of you add funding (Say $175 US for a gold chest and extras available to that user for the donation) that will help you, without being enough to be a game cheat.
          Very interesting.
With Tribes 1 I used to have a massive gaming mouse called a MS Sidewinder Commander from memory, which I pre programmed for all its buttons to allow shortcuts for gaming, like a one button hit to select everything in the inventory I wanted, rather than wasting time picking each time (So I could get back quickly to be shot by my nemesis :-) )

        • @Op54:
They reached their funding goal I believe - the high cost at the moment is just to get into the Alpha.. not worth paying that now as the beta is about a month away I believe. In the the end the game will be free to play but will have some 'prorgression' elements which you can skip by paying like $20-30 and just unlocking everything straight away.
We had an LT tournament a few weeks ago (LT is light armor only, no inv stations / generators) which was fun:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/157754564 (starts at about the 3min mark)
I had only just got it at that point so was still getting my ski-legs back :)

        • @colblair: You still have that speed and flair Col. Yep, that reminds me of the old days for sure. Like you said, this is like Tribes just under another name. Do you have a fast NBN connection in your area of Melbourne or still on ADSL or Cable? Here in Woodvale WA NBN has not appeared for us as yet, but I can certainly see me trying this once we get an NBN 50/20 connection (We will be on HFC, no fibre to our home), and if we manage to get an NBN re-seller who is not over subscribed in in our area of course.
P.S Thanks for the video clip link, that certainly sells it better than screen caps

        • @Op54:

Still on Optus cable :) hasn't changed.. will def look at NBN when it becomes available though.

If you have time check out my YouTube channel:

Been converting a lot of vintage Tribes 2 recordings as well as some of the recent Midair pubs we've been having.

Good to speak to you again - hopefully see you in Midair!

I dont know how many times ive bought this game

  • Red Alert 1 & 2
    C & C Tiberium Wars
    Generals

some top quality games sad to see the RTS genre slowly dying there is only so much you can do but other titles like Age of Empires 2, Star Craft have a charm to them building a base with defense training soldiers etc

I wish i could get a copy of Dune 2000 another great RTS

  • Generals was great, but you know for a good RTS I still play Age of Mythology on Steam. It's great fun and lots of players! Its been updated too, and has high def graphics.

    • …and Duke 3D for the best FPS still ever made. Still play that too online (dukematches.net)

  • Played the original C&C and was hooked. Only game that killed the vibe was Renegrade. Anyone download yet and know how GB required?

    • renegade was the only one I played.. loved it lol :P only cos i love fps and hate rts ><

      • in the 90's i hated FPS's, always playing WW through the naughtys… then my 14 year old said, "check this out dad, you can drive the tank and ill sit on the 50" - Battlefield 2 forever i say

  • Has anyone tried installing this on a computer running windows 10? The website states "updated to run on the Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems" but doesn't seem to mention Windows 10 at all unfortunately.

    • +1

Tried for months to get RA2 running on w10. Nothing seems to work definitively. Would absolutely love a solution to the flashing screens, blackouts, etc.

    • +1

I still enjoy Generals and Zero Hour so much that when I moved from Windows 7 pro 64bit to try Win10 during the free upgrade and found that I could not get these games running at all, so I went back to my Windows 7 pro (Using the GenTools executable to get them both to run right on my Windows 7 Pro). Sad I know that I am ruled by something as simple as a game. Once there is something to run my loved games on Windows 10 I will migrate to 10 then.

  • Apparently you need to be online to play the games. Can someone confirm?

  • Great games, if only they ironed it out to the point where it's nearly as flexible as starcraft 2 :((

  • I bought this from EB Games (physical copy) for $14.95…all I got was a Disc Cover with instructions online to download Origin.

  • My childhood was:

    • warcraft 1 and 2
    • dune 2
    • fullthrottle
    • duke nukem 3d

Played so many RTS games back in the days. They were really good. Started in 95…It was at its peak early 2000s

Dune 2: The building of dynasty (Sandworms lol)
    C&C
    C&C Red Alert
    WarCraft
    WarCraft 2
    Age of Empires
    Syndicate
    XCOM

It spawns a lot of RTS as well from other developers. Everyone jumped on the bandwagon to create RTS games.

    Total Annihilation
    KKND
    Dark Reign
    Homeworld

At its peak I think was StarCraft, WarCraft 3 and C&C Generals. Those titles were amazing. So much online activity, it was first time proper good online RTS and custom maps.

The last good RTS to me was SC2, however it doesn't live up to its hype anymore.

Then RTS really died. They try to remake the old eg. Dune 2000, C&C 3 etc they were all disappointments. Yup agree EA killed all.

    • sc2 is still good fun, so intense! just wish there was a similar RTS as slick as SC2, it stands alone!
