PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Help

Hey guys
I have a PS3 Slim 160gb which is almost full and I still use it. Need to upgrade the Hard drive so I can get some more digital content etc

What is the best drive and the best price. One that fits perfectly and won't cause issues etc

Thanks

  • Twisty Any 2.5" sata Laptop Drive. 9.5mm height will do. I think from memory both of mine have Western Digital 5400rpm. No Issues. I would have prefered Seagate. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/setti…

      Does the size matter? I was thinking a 1TB but didn't know if the PS3 can take or use the 1TB

      I was looking at this SSHD

      Seagate Firecuda 1TB 2.5" 7mm SSHD Hybrid Hard Drive Which is about $99 or I can get a normal 1TB Hard Drive for $79 - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 2.5" 7mm Notebook Hard Drive

      Both are 7mm so I'm guessing that even those is 2mm smaller then the stock drive it won't make a difference installing? Won't be loose?

      • Twisty, 1Tb would be fine. I only put 9.5mm 2.5" 500Gb in mine. Still heaps of space and a lot cheapers. I got mine from Amazon US. But exchange rate not good at the moment. Not sure about 7mm. Don't forget it was made for the 9.5mm with brackets. So don't think 7mm would be secured properly..I could be wrong. I have the 160 Gb PS3 and the Super Slim 12gb, Replaced with 500Gb. Bit more here, but that also say 2.5" 9.5mm too https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/927750-playstation-3/6757864…

        • Thanks
          It seems 7mm will fit fine

          Now to find out if a 2TB will work and use all 2TB

          Edit - 2TB drives won't work on PS3 I have found out. Seems the limit in size is 1TB

          @Twisty: yes I just popped in here to say that 1TB is the PS3 size limit

          @Twisty: SSHD will give you quicker loading in many cases, it's the best compromise between speed and storage.

          Thanks again

        • @Twisty:
          Go the cheapest Option :)

          @Twisty:
          Get the normal drive. No advantage of the sshd in PS3. PCs yes, PS3 no.

          Yes, and you will have more Money for games:)

        • @megod:

          If you look at the links it's only a small difference in price

          So no difference what so ever?

        • @Twisty:
          Don't forget, that is US Dollar at Amazon, so add exchange rate in. https://www.xe.com/ratealerts/

          @megod:

          What's the best proce on a 1tb drive for the PS3?

        • @Twisty: There is an advantage to SSHD in many cases on PS3, it's just not as big as it can be on PC. There is a bottleneck on PS3 but SSHD still performs faster than a regular HDD.

          Ok thanks

          Now just to find a decent good price

  • Will this drive be good in my PS3?

    WD WD5000LPVX

    http://www.msy.com.au/pc-components/5333-wd-25-notebook-500g…

    I was reading that WD drives may not be good in PS3 due to the spin down they have?

    Would this drive be better ?

    http://www.msy.com.au/5-internal-hdd/17939-seagate-25-barrac…

    Or the other option is a seagate 1TB SSHD drive for $85
