It looks like they've got a $20 US discount on the box today. I think it may require Prime Membership? I don't remember becoming a Prime member, but it shows $179.99 for me, so I'm not sure if you need that or not.

"This is a Prime Day only deal, which means it'll expire at 11:59 p.m (PT) today. There won't be unlimited stock, either, so I'd get in quick if you don't want to miss out."

  • Yeah you need a prime membership. I just bought one and used my free trial.

Cheapest price you will find it anywhere.
Also the cheapest historically for something that never goes on sale.

      never goes on sale.

      $20 US discount

      Cannot compute

      • Hasn't been on sale up until this point?

        • I meant up until now. Well as far as I have seen and I've been eyeing one off since it came out.

  • I don't think Prime membership is required for this. I just bought one and I am not a prime member. All in USD

    • I finally got one as well. I've been hanging out for a price drop because I still had about $20 in promotional discounts to use as well to drop it even further. I probably could have saved even more if I'd used the 28 degrees card, but I'm not sure about that.

  • Sadly nothing on the Pro

    • +1

I have a Pro and I wouldn't go with it again. I had to return one due to a firmware update not playing nice with the drive and I have found that performance on a mibox I built was snappier, most likely due to the mechanical drive.

You would be better off getting the 16gb and SD Cards or external drives (if running a plex server).

      • +1

It looks like the only differences were 500GB, IR receiver, microSD and 400g… which seems a lot. https://m.androidcentral.com/nvidia-shield-android-tv-specs

But greater storage and storage options make a a lot 0f sense as a differentiator on a thing like this.

        • +1

My purpose is primarily for Plex and everywhere I have read it is recommended to go with the Pro because PMS files are only stored (at this stage) on the internal hard drive. I don't have a big library (around 2 TB) however plex has already taken around 5gig of space on my laptop so unsure how long the 16gig will last.

  • Prime is not required, and you need to put Amazon in the title OP.

The 2017 Nvidia Shield is 40 percent smaller than its predecessor but has the exact same processing power and runs the same Android TV($174.99 at Amazon.com) software. Pricing is also the same as the older version: $200 for the basic version with 16GB of onboard storage, and $300 for the Shield Pro with 500GB.

The old and new Shield TV have what Nvidia calls "software parity," so the the differences between the two are all hardware-based:

The 2017 Shield lacks an SD card slot (you can still augment its storage via USB)
The new controller is smaller and easier to grip
It has better battery life, haptic vibration and a far-field mic for Google Assistant
A remote, previously a $50 add-on, is now included in the box

Is this the old one listed in this deal?

  • I picked up one as well, pity the HDHomeRun wasn't on sale - that could have been a steal

    • +4

      And wrong for Aus.

  • its just a streamee right? i still need a pc to play cmputee game, right?

    • +10

Yesee, that's rightee, you need a PCee.

Then you can streamee to your TVee.

      • Might be easier to use the HDMI cable to your TV…. why "Steam" when you can Plug-n-Play ? it's not Yum Cha…LoL

      • Scabee cutee

  • Not prime membership couldn't get the further discount

    • Yeah same here!

    • $257.77 AUD on my 28 degrees Card.

  • only if we had better currency exchange rates :(

For those with an IR universal remote, I believe this model does not have an IR receiver (only the 500GB Pro version does).

    • I have a Samsung smart TV 2017 version and the smart tv remote works perfectly on this unit. Turns the unit on and off and full functionality. No need for universal remote

      • +4

That is more than likely via CEC not IR.

        • Yep it is via cec. Knew hidden behind entertainment unit and still works

    • well that's a deal breaker :(

    • +1

It doesn't. I bought a FLIRC receiver as well so can use my harmony remote.

  • Is this worth the price difference compared to a mibox (~$75) especially when some of the apps are US based only?

Can anyone comment on their experience on Nvidia gamestream vs Steam link?

    • +2

Honestly, I have both and I prefer the shield (gen 1). It runs faster than the mi box, less processing delays and has more frequent updates (good for security considering it's always on). It also doesn't stutter on 4k streams whereas I find the mi box can stutter.

I love the headphone jack on the remotes (not sure if they're still on gen 2) for the simplicity of being able to plug headphones into the wireless controllers and watch TV without disturbing anyone.

A lot of the Nvidia apps are global and not US restricted. I don't use it for gaming so I can't comment much on that, implosion and borderlands 2 run well enough, although for obvious reasons borderlands runs better on PC and ps4.

      • Thanks for your views. I didn't end up getting one.

Also if you have bluetooth headphones then it will also work with the mibox.

  • Has a Tegra X1 GPU (same as the Nintendo Switch), with 1000 GFLOPS (16bit), 500 GFLOPS (32bit)

  • Can this box see files over a network connection like the WDTV Live used to? As in, it looks at what's on a drive in a networked computer, gives me a list of those files, and I can select one to play.

    • Yes it can. I have mine stream video files from a hard drive running in NAS mode on my nighthawk modem router.

  • Cheapest price on the Switch yet!

    • Be amusing if the next Nintendo console hack occurs because of the Nvidia Shield.

      • I mean, I'm just being a dick and joking and all, but I'd be down for my thing to be cracked open sooner than later.
