Best Partition Type for Macosx, Windows and Time Machine

I have Mac OSX Sierra with Windows 10x64 BootCamp.

I'd like to be able to:
- Share (read and write) files between Windows BootCamp and Mac
- Ability to do Mac time machine backup to this partition

What's the best partition that can do that?

Ps: I found EXTFS can be accessed by Windows and Mac, but not as good as NTFS/FAT32 link
as a matter of fact, I have created one and has started to provide corruption during disk check.

I'd like to be able to:
    - Share (read and write) files between Windows BootCamp and Mac

Firstly, know the limitations of each OS.
Mac OS can only read NTFS file system (Windows)
Windows cannot read or see the HFS+ file system (Mac OS)

You will need a third party tool to enable this functionality. Paragon NTFS for Mac will allow the Mac to READ and WRITE to the bootcamp parition when you are booting from Mac OS.

Paragon HFS+ For Windows (a separate product), when booting into bootcamp, will allow you to see, read and write to Mac OS partition.

I've used both in the past and they work the best in my experience. But now I just use a server share and dump all my files there and map both OS to the server to access files.

    • Ability to do Mac time machine backup to this partition

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, are you trying to back up both partitions (Windows and Mac) to time machine?

    • Thanks for your response!

I've been thinking about Paragon software too (especially the UFSD Value pack), as it comes with the lifetime free upgrade.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, are you trying to back up both partitions (Windows and Mac) to time machine?

In relation to the Time Machine, I'd like to backup Mac only; as I found it is a good and handy backup tool in the market

      • Normally just use a external HD and format it to HFS+ (or exFat) and it will work. You dont really need to a specific Mac OS external drive but it does save a little time in the process.

ExFAT should also work for Time machine, but also allow the Windows OS to read and write to it to. You do lose the benefits of HFS+ like encryption and the ability to password protect the drive.

        • ExFAT should also work for Time machine

Time Machine works with HFS+ volume only, even a network volume.

        • @O O: Thinking ahead of myself there (late night). Your right, only HFS+ for external drives.

    • Did you use your server share for time machine backup too? Has it been a good experience so far?

      • Yeah, as long as your server can support AFP it should be fine. My NAS is formatted with ext4 (linux) in a RAID5 + enabling AFP and time machine works fine. I'm using a Synology NAS

  • I would not mix and match, unless you want to risk your Time Machine backup.

  • As others have said, I would partition the internal for OSX and Windows and then have an external for the OSX backup. Your mac should have a recovery partition anyway so no real benefit to have TM on the boot drive. You will not be able to use a TM partition in Windows. So, with your external you could partition it as follows:

1: Time Machine (Mac OS Extended Journaled)

2: FAT32 to allow sharing of files between OSX and Windows.

    As a side note:

I'm a big advocate for Carbon Copy Cloner over TM. I find time machine to be great for individual files but for a whole system annoying. With CCC I can boot from my external and restore the system to ANY mac. CCC has a Safety Net feature which acts like TM.

Furthermore, Apple will be releasing a new file system with the next OS update.. I am sure this will have an impact.

    • 2: FAT32 to allow sharing of files between OSX and Windows.

FAT32 works fine but is limited in 4GB files. Its an older file system. I would move to exFAT which doesn't have this limitation and its compatible with both Windows 10 and Mac OS as well
