Sony Xperia XA Issues

Bought a XA price matched by HN when this deal was offered - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/298788

I got an unlock code for it and use an Optus SIM in it.

I'm having a few issues…

The data disconnects regularly through the day. Sometimes I can turn off Mobile data, then back on a minute later, and other times I try Aeroplane Mode (on, then off). Mostly though, it only stays on for a minute then drops off again. If I reboot the phone, its usually right for a while, but will play up later. I have tried all the various APNs but seems to make little difference.

My bluetooth headset disconnects once in a while. Might be a couple of times a day, maybe not at all. Cycling the phone's Bluetooth usually restores connection.

I think I'm going to have to cut my losses and buy a better phone if I can't find a solution to these issues.

Cheers

  • First things first… have you updated your firmware to the latest?

  • -6

Android devices do all sorts of batshit crazy things.

  • +3

if you are still on marshmallow (android 6.xx), do the update to nougat (android 7.xx) if it has rolled out in Australia. To check just open settings, scroll to about phone look under android version to see which you are on.

Next thing to check is under Settings —> battery, make sure battery saver is off.

Finally go to settings, look under 'wireless and networks', tap on 'more'. There should be "access point names or APN", tap on that one then on top right, tap the three dots reset to default.

If connection still drops go to an optus store and swap sim card to a new one, they usually give it free of charge. Dirty or old sim cards can have dents and just plain worn from being pressed in the sim card slot.

If that finally doesn't work, check if optus has full 3G/4G towers in your area where you are, go to https://oztowers.com.au/ and click on search on top bar. Xperia XA has all the Aus frequencies in its radio chip.

After this if it doesnt work then consider a warranty replacement or change to a different phone.

  • Phone has 6.0. There doesn't appear to be any system updates available.

    Stamina Mode = off
    Ultra Stamina Mode = off
Any particular services that I might want to add to "Do not apply battery optimisation"?

Resetting APNs lost data all together.

SIM was taken from my previous phone. I don't lose signal - I lose data. I can still make and receive calls, and have some bars.

4G has been here for a couple of years now.

Is it possible to re-lock the SIM for warranty claim?
I think another phone might be the best way.

    • Yep, looks like you have an older sim card, just input the APN manually

go to settings, look under 'wireless and networks', tap on 'more'. There should be "access point names or APN". tap the plus sign and add APN (if there isn't a plus sign on top right, tap the three dots then 'add apn'). You will need to create 2, one for MMS and one for DATA

Fill these fields only and leave the rest as is.

      FOR DATA

      Name: Optus Internet
      APN: yesinternet
      Authentication Type: PAP
      APN Type: default,supl

Tap the three dots on top right and save

      FOR MMS

      Name: Optus MMS
      APN: mms
      MMSC: http://mmsc.optus.com.au:8002/
      MMSC Proxy: 61.88.190.10
      MMS port: 8070
      Authentication Type: PAP
      APN Type: mms

Tap the three dots on top right and save

So there should be 2 apns now, tap the dot next to the 'Optus Internet'

      Thats should be all set

  • I've tried them all… internet, yesinternet, connect, connectme, yesbusiness.

Just recreated and restarted. See how it goes.

  • I've had to give up. I'm connecting to a hotspot on my old phone with a cracked screen.

I need a better phone me thinks

  • Have you tried factory reset yet?
And last resort you can get it warranty repaired for free…

  • Have not done Factory reset. Might give that a go.

Warranty claim - will do once I get a replacement phone as I need one in the meantime.
