Opinions on switching to Simply Energy (QLD)

I'm currently with AGL and have done the sums and switching to the current plan Simply Energy are doing with the 18% discount for RACQ members is going to be cheaper for me. Particularly the daily supply charge (88.81c/day exc. GST) for a single rate with controlled load 2 is about 20c/day cheaper than anyone else. I actually just spoke to their online support to confirm there's no hidden charges like metering cap/non-cap, or any of that other stupid crap and they insist it's as advertised.

Anyway, when I look at reviews of Simply Energy they're beyond bad. Seems a lot of the negativity is towards their door to door sales monkeys which I don't care about. What do actual customers on here think of them? Realistically I've never had anything to do with my power retailer - I just sign up online with direct debit and there's no further interaction until I ditch them.

  • I'm in NSW and looking around at different energy providers as well. Daily Supply charge for Simply Energy is 20c lower but the disconnection and reconnection fees are $225.75 and $66 respectively while the fees with Red Energy for these is $39.08. I guess if you're sure you won't move within the contract period, the discount should be worth it.

    • I rent but I've been there for 4 yrs and the relationship with the landlord is good so I don't expect to be moving on anytime soon.

The contract is specified as "ongoing with benefit period". With the benefit period specified as 24 months and the benefit itself being 8% discount on top of the regular 10%. My interpretation of an "ongoing contract" is essentially a no term contract you can leave at any time. Am I incorrect?

  • We're with simply. They supply electricity, we pay for it. Not sure there's much more to the relationship than that.

Their electricity seems just as good as the other providers.

  • I am in QLD too.
18% discount sounds good, but you need to look at the standard undiscounted rate too.
Best discount I have heard of is 21% on $0.255860 inc. GST (peak tariff with Origin):
    $0.25586/kwh-21%=$0.2021294/kwh inc gst
    Discount is on usage only.
Daily supply is $1.281170 inc gst and there is no discount on that with Origin.
The daily supply charge you mention (88.81c/day exc. GST) or (99.691 inc GST) is really good. Is it the already discounted rate?
If you are a low user you will benefit for the discount on daily supply even if the usage rate you pay is higher.

    • Supply charge is more important to me being in a single person household where not much power is consumed. The daily supply charge is not included in the 18% discount, however I just checked with their online chat and they've confirmed they're advertised usage rates don't include the 18% discount so you can tack that on too!

  • Do you have only 1 meter for peak tariff?
Just had a look and their supply charge is for each tariff type (meter).
    Supply Charge PEAK
    cents/day 85.8700 +GST=94.4570
    Supply Charge (Controlled Load 1)
    cents/day 88.8100 +GST=97.6910
    Supply Charge (Controlled Load 2)
    cents/day 88.8100 +GST=97.6910
If you have peak and off peak you will end up paying a lot for supply only.
Origin has also an additional suly charge for off peak but it is only 2 or 3 cents per day.
