Travel Insurance Claim - Missed Our Flight Because of App

So, booked a flight to OOL to ATHENS on Scoot's new route. Booked back in February and supposed to depart today.

I imported the itinerary into TRIPIT back when I made the booking in February. I have always used Tripit to plan my holidays and never had an issue.

Turned up to the airport today and had missed the flight, the TRIPIT departure time was the arrival time of the stop over in Singapore.

Have got QBE travel insurance via ANZ Platinum CC which says - "If you have to cancel any pre-paid travel arrangements due to any unforeseen or unforeseeable circumstances outside of your control we will pay you up to the applicable limit as set out in the schedule of benefits for the value of the unused travel arrangements, less any refunds due to you, or the reasonable cost of rearranging your trip, provided that this cost is not greater than the cancellation fees or lost deposits which would have been incurred had the trip been cancelled."

What does everyone reckon? Will I recover the $2500 I had to fork out for the new flights?

    Hi,

As far as an Insurance Claim goes…

You need to isolate and identify those pre-paid travel arrangements that you had to "cancel".

If you are seeking recompense or to claim for an alternate flight to substitute for the Scoot Flight ex OOL, then I'd say no, you missed the flight and you can't cancel flights after the fact.

You have done your cash and I cannot understand why you had not checked and double checked your itinerary

  • +18

    What? You blame an app??

    • +25

      Well, that won't fly… lol

  • +27

travel insurance claim - missed our flight because I didn't double check the flight itinerary

    Fixed that for you.

  • +3

I don't think you will have much luck trying to claim this as this error was within your control.

Wouldn't you have had your Scoot itinerary/PNR printed anyway for check in?

    • That would be a waste of time and paper. No airline needs the itinerary printed out.

  • +1

Always someone else to blame isn't there…. Its the apps fault!

I've never had issues with tripit, but then I also double check the ticket from the airline and the fligts are ontime etc the day before and the morning before heading to the airport.

    Each to their own.

OP try it and see I guess. Might just be a costly life lesson for you.

Sue TRIPIT! Unforseen and unforseeable means things like the death of a parent, so I really doubt if blaming an app will fly. You would probably have had emails from the airline inviting you to check in online, you paid no attention to those? You didn't look at the itinerary when you booked to form a mental image of when you would have to set out for the airport? Too bad then.

I "missed" my flight because I screwed up on the dates of arrival and departure, and I have been flying for years.

Its a stressful time and bloody expensive. Sorry I understand your pain.

However I cant see how you can make a claim on insurance for this. Its not "unexpected" its an error. By your definition, obviously missing a flight is unexpected. No body books a non refundable flight, pays for it, "expecting" to miss it.

With all international travel, check and recheck, and while some cool dudes can plan to arrive just in time, I always like to be there a few hours early incase of delays getting to airport, plus if flight is cancelled etc, you get a better chance of getting on alternative flight.

BTW I used "missed" as at the time, while I would have missed the flight I was fortunate that it also got cancelled, so if it hadnt been cancelled I would have had no luck claiming this from insurance. (I found this all out after I was due to fly and got stressed with the thought I had missed it)

all that said, try your claim, like me "missing" my flight you might just get lucky. I think everyone else above, are just telling you not to get your hopes up.

Does anyone hear that bellowing laughter? That's the insurance mail room guys opening this claim.

  • Look it is worth ringing up and asking, the worst they can do is say no. Personally I think it ain't going to fly, (pun intended), but you never know. I'm absolutely paranoid about this sort of thing but we still almost got caught out several years ago when the travel agent put the wrong time down for one of our trains on the itinerary. We made the train but it was a very nervous bus ride from the town we were in to the town with the railway station as the minutes ticked down.

    • Agree, you can only ask. But if they laugh at you and say no, don't be shocked!

    The computer said No

Sure i keep things to log and remind me, when it comes to travel i still check myself.

Qantas is great at this if the flight time has changed for whatever reason i get a txt normally when i'm sitting on the plane thats about to get ready to take off.

I reckon your best chance is with Tripit if you can still demonstrate the issue and it wasn't user error.

      1. Liability Disclaimer And Limitation Of Liability

      tl;dr
You use Tripit at your own risk.

hahahaha oh please…. tripit won't give a toss, without even looking I'm be bet you $1k, tripit will have a clause saying use at own risk, you can't claim a cent off them for wrong info/missed anything.

I am sure they do have disclaimers that cover them. Was thinking more 'this error in your system caused X', potential good publicity and being able to fix the (apparent) error in their system.

        • You assume there is an error and that the OP didn't read the times wrong.

They said it was showing up as the outbound flight from oz as the 'landing time' in singapore, or did they just read it wrong and think their outbound flight from singapore was their outbound flight from australia.

Either way, not tripit issue. OP booked the ticket, they should know when they booked it. Flights from OZ east coast to singapore are around 8hrs. This is a pretty big 'whoops' in time.

  • Hi OP. Good luck check with tripit as well as QBE Great if you can get your money back. Bad luck if you can't i guess. But hopefully you still enjoy your trip!

    • He wasnt able to even start his trip..

      • Will I recover the $2500 I had to fork out for the new flights?

  • You didn't double check it anywhere else? I have TRIPIT premium and never ever had a problem. In fact one time when my flight got cancelled on a certain airline I got an alert from TRIPIT and not the airline. (They told me their SMS system wasn't working or something). Thanks to TRIPIT I called and the airline rebooked me right away.

That being said departure times change, technology can fail and at the end of the day it's your responsibility to make sure you make it to the airport without the assistance of a app. I find it very difficult to believe it only showed the departure from the Singapore stopover.

I actually reckon by the time you checked the app for the departure time, the plane WAS in Singapore (i.e. 8 hours later?). How late were you OP?

QBE or TRIPIT won't cover anything.

Mistakes happen, you done f***ed up but everyone does at one point or another.

  • Thanks for the laugh OP. Who relies on a 3rd party app like tripit to check departure dates and times for an intl flint?! And how do you not know your correct flight time anyway since you booked it.

    Lols

Next time I forget to do my homework, I will say my mobile phone app forgot to remind me to do it ! My excuse that the dog ate my homework was no longer flying with the teacher.

I got burnt once when I thought my flight was a hour later than the actual time. Got to the airport and got a shock when the check-in agent said the flight had already closed, I looked at my ticket again and realised my stupid error. Luckily was on a flex ticket and got put on the next flight, unfortunately the next flight was 8 hours later.. Lesson learnt, triple check everything.

  • Rule no 1 - trust, but verify

  • thanks for all the replies. confirmed what i thought… i say I've a 30/70 chance recovering via QBE, if anyone's interested in a wager!

IMO, My odds are 1% via tripit, would be my guess… As a side note, I'm a lawyer, I've read tripit's terms, up ht creek without a paddle comes to mind… But, being a lawyer, of course I'll try!

In all honesty, if I was the assessor I'd laugh at me too, however, the QBE person I spoke to via phone at the airport seemed to think we had a fairly good shot.

I've already made the claim, and will update!

    • Good thing you are not a pilot :)

    • Good thing you're not my lawyer, you might forget to turn up if I ever go on trial. ;)

      • I'd just say I forgot about it, I hate criminal law…..

pleased to announce that our claim was paid out in FULL!

    • Under what clause/reasoning was it paid out in full?

      • +1

The clause I described above. it was an unforeseeable circumstance outside my control.

Helped that I obtained an email from tripit stating that their software had caused the import error, rather than my misuse.
