Visiting Brisbane for First Time

Dear friends,

I will be visiting Brisbane for the first time with my family and follow by Gold Coast.

I would like to know -

  1. Are there any day ticket or family tickets for public transport. I fail to find on the metro website. so does that mean I have to pay every trip on the public transport?

  2. Are there any must visit places in Brisbane? or general tips of how to visit the city. Many thanks. We are staying in hotels in city CBD.

many thanks.

Get on the free city hopper ferry and do a lap or two. If you're lucky there's one with outdoor rooftop seating so you should get some good pictures. Also it's different in the day or at night so maybe do it twice.

For public transport you can get the SeeQ pass or Gold Coast Explore card which might save you money on trains/buses/ferries…

+1 for this, even better if you can do it at sunset. Kangaroo Point cliffs is also a great place to see the city from during sunset, and use google maps to see the walk from the city, botanical gardens, goodwill bridge around kangaroo point cliffs then over the storey bridge and back along riverside. the walk takes about 1.5-2 hours.

Try Translink it cover buses, trains and ferries. There's free bus loops in the Brisbane city, spring hill and south bank(ferry).
There's a Marvel exhibition in town at the museum.GOMA

      ++ GOMA

    Southbank is worth a visit.

Also, if you want to go to several theme parks on the Goldy - look into a VIP Magic Pass - https://themeparks.com.au/box-office/vip-magic-pass/renewal-…

As others have pointed out, free city loops and we also have some free ferries(the red ones) which I believe other cities do not have. :P Free buses and ferries can be a bit crowded during peak hours because locals use them too!

Free activities to do in the city: Visit Southbank, Roma Street Parklands and Botanical Gardens. If you are a avid jogger/runner, the running loop around the river using your choice of pedestrian bridges is quite nice. Sign up to meet up with a Brisbane Greeter beforehand who will take you on a walking tour around the city(Needs a few days notice).

    Other tips:
    * Get yourself a discounted Brisbane Wheel tickets on Groupon before you arrive if you are into that kind of thing.
    * Marvel exhibition is on at GOMA if you have kids and/or you are into that kind of thing. Entry fee applies.
    * QLD has KFC Hot and Spicy All. Year. Round. (except the KFC in Roma Street station for some reason) Think about that for a sec.

    • haha, i can't eat spicy food, wicked wing is my limit. lol

  • its not Brisbane, its brisvegas…..

  • Bribie Island is north of Brissie. I loved it, a nice place to live I reckon. There's a (no-toll) bridge across to drive over.

+1 on a day out on Bribie Is. Its between BNE & the SSC and off season and out of holidays you can get a night accommodation facing the 'passage'/water with million$ views for $90-150 for a single/family. The SSC is a 45 min easy drive for serious shopping and sight seeing but its getting like the goldcoast. Overcrowded and overpriced. Bribie makes for a nice repreive! It has a shopping centre, fuel, banks so your not robionson cursio…

      • I live on Bribie, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for a day trip. It has a surf beach and the Pumicestone passage but they are going to the Gold Coast anyway.

If you have a chance, Eat Street in Hamilton on either a Friday/ Saturday night or Sunday afternoon. Not sure how to get there via public transport but it's worth a visit. It's super busy though so keep that in mind if you have small children. Entry fee is $2-2.50 I believe. :)

    • Eat St is now on the ferry route and highly recommended

Dine at the Eagle Street Pier and arrive before sunset. Beautiful view to the Story Bridge.
City Hall provides free tour for its building, and also to the clock tower. The ride in the lift is very special.
Go to the island: Stradbroke, St Helena, Moreton Bay…
Saturday afternoon: Jan Power Market in the city.
New Farm Market in September for the Jacaranda.
    Chinese food in Sunnybank.
Mt Cootha before sunset, dinner at the Summit….

  • +1 for island hopping thru Moreton bay
It's the big secret of Brisbane right on its doorstep

  • Definitely start with the free ferry circuit and the bus one too.

In other cities where there is one, I always do the whole circuit on day 1 and then I get my bearings and an overview. Then I stop where I wish to explore.

The suggestions of Southbank, kangaroo Point Cliffs, the city walks, the old botanical gardens in the city, Mt Cootha views (and on the way the new Botanical gardens if you wish - with planetarium there too), Roma Street Parklands, shopping in the Queen Street Mall, Eagle Street Pier and the suggested markets. Eat street st Hamilton too if you can. Portside Whatf is nearby.

the Valley (China town - though Sunnybank has surpassed it now in many ays) And New Farm (including New Farm Park) depending on time.

Brisbane has demolished so much of its old buildings. If you like that sort of thing, there are not many left- Customs House is the most well known - but a walk down George St towards the old botanical gardens will reveal many Of the old parliament (and new).

High tea at Four Points by Sheraton is fun if you are into that.

Brisbane is known as BrisVegas or Brissie by the locals - here everything ends in an ie or y… welcome to Qld - the Sunshine State - beautiful one day and perfect the next (unless you are here when it rains!!). If it is soon, then yell "Go the maroons" and boo "the cockroaches" aka NSW - if you are in a place playing state of origin game 3 - to fit in.

  • No. There is nothing worthwile to see in Brisbane.

Save your time, money and effort and stay on the Gold Coast for a bit longer.

  • No day tickets anymore I believe.
But if you get a Go card from station then its $2.60 for upto 2 hours travel during off peak. And about $3 during peak. Kids travel free at weekends with an adukt who has a go card

    • The. best for visitors is the SeeQ actually as someone else said - 3 or 5 days unlimited travel. Adults and child versions. Best purchased online - cheaper.

The GoCard is for locals - more permanent.
