Fixing a Leaking Roof Repair

How would I go about finding somebody suitable for finding and fixing a leaking Roof?
I know that there is one leak but can not find it on the roof.

House is 20 years old and is tiled.
If I have to have it all fixed up and restored then it's ok but I don't want to pay $1000's for a amateur job with no guarantee.

What Profession would I need to look into?

Are there any known poor/good ones?

Thanks

Get a ladder go up on the roof, and check how big is the issue. :)
make sure you got someone with you to assists you, you don't want $10,000 medical bill to save $1000.
If its a crack tile, quick trip to Bunnings will do, else find someone via local paper. :)

    • Done that - can't see anything wrong, but every time it rains it leaks.

well try to mimic the rain, use the hose, cracks in roof not always directly above the leak :)
look for crack in surrounding areas.

  • A roof plumber is probably the profession you want to look up.

    • Thanks

  • Absolutely look at the local newspaper for tradies (you can find your local paper online) and look under "Roofing Services". A local tradie will know what to look for.

best place to find the leak would inside the roof cavity, not standing on top of the roof.

surely if you are seeing evidence inside your room(s), then you have a starting point to find it.

this. get some one to hose down the roof whilst you are in the roof cavity

      • Roof cavity is very small (Height-wise) with air-conditioning ducting everywhere. Las time I tried to go in (after a dead rat) I felt very unsafe.

          send a child

        • @altomic:

yep, I recall running aerial cable under our house as a child because dad couldn't fit thru some gaps

  • 1) from inside the roof cavity - look for light coming in through the tiles (during the day).

    2) make sure your gutters are clean - especially the 'valleys' on a sloping roof. Make sure your down pipes are not blocked.

    3) from within the roof look for signs where the water is coming in - you make no mention of this, but the water may be running along a pipe and leaking into the house some way away from the roof leak. Is there sarking that may be channeling the water internally. Is the water coming through the roof, or down the walls?

    4) Does it leak every time it rains or only heavy rain?

    5) from the outside do any of the tiles appear to have moved?

    6) flat roof joining tiles roofs are notorious for leaking.

You don't provide much info, so above should be a good start.

    • (1) & (3) Like I said it is very difficult and dangerous for me to check - It sounds like it may be running down a beam and dripping on one spot - this now has a mould like appearance on the ceiling.
      (2) Probably not - will need to clean when I am free and it is not pi**ng down..
      (4) Mainly Heavy Rain
      (5) No
