    • +5

It's named after Edward William Coon, who invented the ripening process: http://www.coon.com.au/en/Our-History

Making a comment like that and linking the brand name to a racial slur is what introduces race into the equation.

      • +3

You are a racist for saying its not racist u racist racist

      • +1

So what if the cheese was named after Joe N****r? Would it be okay to name it 'N****r Cheese'?

        • Yes cos its named after Joe Ninja

    • +1

I have a racist cat too.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Coon

The last time I heard someone use the word coon as a derogatory slur was sometime in the 1980s. Everyone has moved on. Have you?

      • Heard it this morning on the school bus

    What about people with Coeliac?

    • +3

      I love Coon cheese.

    • +6

Was named after Edward William Coon, http://www.coon.com.au/en/Our-History

and while you're dragging attention about feeling insufferable over a term thats arguably inappropriate, 'real' issues are effecting our marginalised indigenous folk - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-04/inquest-hears-foetal-a…

Keep bringing up these bs issues though, means we don't have to consider the diabolical happenings in our backyard…

      • +8

That's the danger of these social justice warriors, by getting outraged and offended at terminology and completely inconsequential things, and labeling everything as racist/sexist/oppressive/the patriarchy, it actually distracts from real issues.

    • +1

For those of us wondering what it could mean: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=coon

    • -5

Agreed. See my previous post. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4855108/redir

There have been Aussie Rules Football stands with similarly unfortunate names removed. I believe the this cheese should change their name as well.

    • -2

Why do this during NAIDOC week?

      • +3

Why not? Because Coon Cheese, whose naming origins are outlined above, has sweet F.A. to do with Naidoc Week.

  • +2

    Loving the cheesy puns..

    Ah toasties, love to Edam

    • +2

Edam - the only cheese that is made backwards.

  • I associate the name with Raccoon after Cartman's hero alter-ego "The Coon"

    • -3

      That's pretty racist bro.

      • +3

Sorry, I just realised I assumed your gender. I'm off to cry myself to sleep.

        • I always thought 'bro'like the NZud term was not directed at any gender, you know like dude, or buddy or 'hey there….'.

        • @hoxygt:
I thought the cry myself to sleep was a give away as to the nature of both posts. Apparently not, given the negs.

        • @BartholemewH:

Likewise, meh, sarcasm detection low rate here…

  • +3

Great to see a company celebrating NAIDOC week.

Read up on Edwin Brown. A stand was named after him at a time when a certain word was deemed acceptable. Subsequently it was acknowledged that this particular word was hurtful towards certain people and was thoughtfully removed.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Brown

The word "Coon" should also go the same way.

Would you wear a t-shirt with this logo on it at the AFL or Rubgy League? I think not!

    • +1

The difference is that Edwin Brown had a nickname that is now considered offensive. 'Coon' is the ACTUAL BIRTHNAME of someone.

    • +1

Do you also suggest that descendants of Edward William Coon, or anyone else with that surname for that matter, also have to legally change their name in case people might think it's a racial slur?

    • -1

If my last name was Coon, Spick or Hitler I'd certainly change it as soon as I was legally able to.

  • Has anyone actually got a cheese toastie yet? I saw there was a line but didn't want to wait too long - how long did it take? Worth it?

    • +1

Line was maybe 20 ppl when I went this morning around 10:30. Waited maybe 2 minutes, if that. But was only half a toastie (i.e. a triangle) and was burnt on one side. So overall not worth it for me (and yes I know, you get what you pay for).

  • +1

I just got one a few mins ago.. ☺

It was a small line at that time… Barely waited 5 mins…

  • True to their facebook they were parked there at 6.30am when I passed by but they were not opened given out toasties yet…

  • Not sure what this was ultimately meant to promote. The raising of money for the swimming team or publicity for coin. But it was pretty average and I can't say I'll be running to the stores to buy any
